Entry Point 51 - Missing Link Lake

Missing Link Lake entry point allows overnight paddle only. This entry point is supported by Gunflint Ranger Station near the city of Grand Marais, MN. The distance from ranger station to entry point is 45 miles. Access is a canoe landing at Round Lake with a 142-rod portage to Missing Link Lake. This area was affected by blowdown in 1999.

Excellent report & nice pictures, haven't been in the Ogish & little Saganaga area in years and we came in from the Ely side, but it is a beautiful area. Thanks!

Great Report ! Had me on the edge of my seat imagining the waves and wind on Saganaga!
We were on Lake One Sept. 27-29. The wind never let up that weekend either. I thought about people out on the big water and wondered if they were wind bound or "going for it".
That fish on a stick looks really good. Great idea for next years Minnesota State Fair!

Good trip report RT. I forwarded this report to the two guys who had the bear experience on Robbins Island. They stopped at the GM ranger station & there was already a bear posting for that area.

Good report, RT. I enjoyed it, as usual. I've been on all the lakes you mention after Ogish. I was not surprised that Janice (The Cache Bay Ranger) got you to go back on the tow. She's been there for 26 years and has rescued many paddlers from the waves. She has lost some, though, and that upsets her. This year, when I was going through Cache Bay on my way through the Falls Chain, she told me of pulling out four canoeists who had capsized on Sag near Rocky Point on a day just like you described. There were five total, however, one drowned before she could get him.


The bears around Robbins Island have been a menace for years. Twenty years ago I was camped on a point just across from the island. I was tired, so I left the food pack near my tent with pots on top to warn me if a bear meddled. My brother was sleeping in the tent with me, and sometime in the middle of the night he elbowed me in the ribs and said the pots fell off the pack. I asked him when and he said about 15 minutes ago. So, I was way too late. The bear dragged the pack up a hill where we found it flattened the next morning, with nothing left in the pack. Fortunately, that night we caught lots of fish in Ottertrack Lake and had a good supper. We paddled in the next day.


Since that time I have devised a way to hang food packs between two trees by means of ropes and pulleys. This method always stumps them.

I really enjoyed the lakes that are South of Ogish (Mora, Tusc, Gabi) and I would like to go back to them someday. I just hated the portage to get to them. That 366 rod is a pain in the butt.


While I have seen bears in the BW I have yet to have one mess with my camp. Perhaps I am of the fortunate few on that reguard.
