Nice report! I'm not sure if those are pictographs either, but you are to be commended on your orienteering skills in the retrieval of your lifejacket.

The very existence of flame-throwers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

Ty! It's pretty easy to go almost due south or north :) Paddling around three mile island was a bit of a challenge, there was a spot before Wolf Point that sure LOOKED like it wasn't still the same island. There are quite a few small islands in that lake that made navigation interesting. And there is one campsite that I never did find .... I should have been able to see it just west of my site.

Thanks for sharing a nice story. You are to be commended for striking out alone. Always a tough thing to do but I have found once you get going and once you are out there things improve.

Very nice trip report - and photos. Great job retrieving (bushwhacking) your PFD - wouldn't want to be on Seagull without one. We camped on Three Mile Island a few years back (east side) on a great spot with a nice sandy beach - and caught walleye off the rocks there. It's a great spot! Best wishes for good health - and many more paddling trips to come!

Amok,
What an uplifting trip report on many levels. Congrats on your adventure and your improved health. I found the following verse in Ecclesiastes, it looks like the wind has been around a long time.

Ecclesiastes 1
6 The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.

I also have an Old Towne Kaynoe that I took on a solo this year. It did well in the wind for me and was easy to fish from.

God made me fast. And when I run, I feel His pleasure. Eric Liddell

Hey Alpine, I'm wondering if that's the place I left my PFD? It's got a neat area just west of the 'beach' that is all rock, kindof a point even, that one could get up onto and fish from. And yeah, Seagull would not be a good idea without one, that's why I went back for it on land.

Gunflinter, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks :) There are lots of gems in Ecclesiastes.

It's also nice to know that somebody else uses a short, fat canoe up there. It handled well, no, even better in the wind than it does when it's calm. (better tracking, ha)

My hat's off to you, Amok. You've beaten cancer, had a successful solo trip, and lived to tell about it all. You have good reason to be happy. Maybe you'll want to take a 10-day trip in the spring?

I enjoyed your report, Amok. I hope you have many, many more canoe trips in store. BTW, Seagull is one of my favorite areas south of the border.

My trip plan for next May is to go from Isabella Lake to the Kawishiwi Triangle and exit at EP32, traveling solo, for 10 days. That will probably entail 5 layover days. I can bring one solo boat, two solo boats, or a solo and a tandem. Right now I'm interested in sharing the idea in case anyone wants to play.

That would be fun. Throw me some dates and I'll see if it's something I could do :) I've wanted to see that area. It's on my 'do to' list. (and the wife would feel way more comfortable in a 'group' solo setting!)

Amok,
Congrats on defeating the big "C"!! A trip like that was just what you needed! I know what that feeling is like! In 2008 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer the first week in June! I went on a BWCA trip with 3 newbies the last week in June, we did the Loop through Little Indian Souix, covered about 46 miles in 7 days. I got home on Sunday, rested Monday, and had Brachytherapy done on Tuesday. Took 10 months to get over the radiation, and over a year to get finished with some of the side effects...
Took a great trip with my wife this past summer! And life is good again!

Good Report!

Hi Amok - Great Trip report! Congratulations on winning the September contest. Mary Jo, my dog Freddie and myself daytripped on Sea Gull last Friday and Saturday Oct. 22 and 23.

You are right. Sea Gull is a very interesting lake. The campsites were very good. We took a break at the one you camped at. On Friday we went to the Palisades and continued west. Southwest wind 10-15. We found that campsite that should have been insight of yours. It was on the west side of that island in a little cove.

We explored the west side of Three Mile Island to the tip and then to the west on Saturday. East wind 10-15.

Hope to see you again at a Wing Night.

Thanks, Zulu! I'm going to be going back there sometime. I never did see the pallisades :( I was also going to check out the portage to Jap Lake, but decided against it with the wind that day. Going around 3 mile island was enough for me! I also never went down the west side of the next island over. I checked the east side out at least 3x, tho. Silly maps :) I'm starting to wonder if the east wind is a constant on that lake ...

I didn't know I had won the Sep trip report contest. COOL! Not bad for a first report :D I'm thinking I'll take more pics the next time, there were a few times I wished I had pictures of certain things I wrote about.
