Nice report. This is one of my favorite areas of the BWCA, so it was fun to visit there with you. Great shot of the loon and chicks, too!

Sounds like you all had a wonderful trip. Winchell is one of my favorites lakes in the BWCA. We were in that area last September and had a difficult time finding the trail at the bluffs as well. We did bushwhack our way to the top and we finally found the trail (thankfully)on our way back down. I was amazed at the amount of moose plums that were up in the bluffs....TB even found a Moose shed.

So if you go again the trail begins to the east of the bluffs, there are some downed trees very close to the beginning...climb over them (should be heading towards the bluffs). This is where we went wrong heading up.....we headed to the left of the down trees where it looked like the trail was. Albeit it was from others trying to find it as well.

I really enjoyed your trip report. We have been to this area a number of times and your trip report brought back lots of great memories. The pictures were fantastic - I liked the close up of the eagle and the loon with her chicks. After reading this report I just want to be in the BW right now. I have four more weeks before my next trip! Thanks for putting together a nice report!

Thanx for the goose-bumps! Great read on a quiet night @ work. Inspired me to look up the 'Eagle on the tombstone' article.

You really captured the anticipation and excitement of taking the long road trip up north. I thought it was funny that you guys even skipped breakfast on your first day in so you could just get started. There's absolutely nothing better than a persons first day of the trip.

Also, you guys ate really nice! That's a lot of fun too, cooking good meals in the BW. Glad you all had a good time.
