Excellent report. Excellent results that many who have been tripping for years don't get!!! Those walleye were quite impressive!! Great writing skills.
The "water spout" you saw was very likely a "water devil" or "dust devil" over the water. They are rather harmless-- unless one happens to go directly over your canoe. They are caused by the uneven heating of the land and the water with perfect "mixing" from the winds. Usually occur in the mid/late afternoon. They are quite uncommon,, and usually make a "wheeshing" noise.

The two loudest sounds known to man: a gun that goes bang when it is supposed to go click and a gun that goes click when it is supposed to go bang.

Nice report, glad you had fun family time, good on you for making it work and be a cool adventure your girls will always remember, even if you do not do it again.

Sounds like the trip was a huge success!!! Mike and Lin are such good people. Great report and thanks for sharing! It's such a crap shoot with campsites in that area. I've passed through Caribou when it's full but when my daughter and I stayed on Caribou (same site as you and it's a great site) there was only one other site occupied and it was the last weekend in July which is supposed to be the busiest time in the bwca.

Also, thanks for saying hi to them for me. I haven't been to Rockwood for a couple years now as my last 4 trips have been to the Ely and Sawbill Trail areas.

Great report! Horseshoe is my favorite lake in the BWCA. Glad your family enjoyed it. That is where I will take my 3 kids for their first trip!

The sound of a paddle in still waters will steal your soul.

That's a great trip and a roaring success for your first family trip. Keep bringing 'em back!

P.S. Bring a few rubber worms or live leeches and fish the shorelines or moving water (below rapids etc) for bass. For northerns cast a rapala behind the canoe and troll just off the shorelines, just far out enough to avoid the snags.

I enjoyed reading your report. In 2014 I stayed at that same site on Horseshoe with my son. Also saw momma moose and two young ones on Poplar lake. Think they're the same ones as you saw?

Great report. It's so magical when your children get their first fish! Glad you know about just "going with the flow" and not being a slave to plans and itinerary. A lesson that took me years to learn. Happy years of enjoying all the wonders of the BWCA

Thanks for sharing I really enjoyed reading how you and your family enjoyed your trip. Nice pictures and boy were you lucky to see a moose. Even better that the girls had a great time, caught fish and enjoyed their experience.
