As a side note the fishing is pretty good in the little cove where the trail ends at Crooked.

I have a GPS track of what we did, but I'm not sure it is the "east side" trail. We just put in the water where the "mountain goat" part started, then portaged again after a short ways, then put in the water again and paddled to the dam, which we portaged around. This was going from Argo to Crooked. If anyone wants the track let me know.

Sorry I don't have the GPS track, but it is very close to the mountain trail ya did. All I remember was having done the Portage trail many times in the past before it got flooded I went left like you did with my buddy Maverick and saw the "mountain goat" trail...he said no way :) so we scouted up the small stream flowage coming off of the beaver dam just a short distance away and saw we could put in on top of the beaver dam---to the right of the stream. Then just paddled until we found the portage---it seemed really obvious where you took out on the beaver pond at the time--we could see the portage from the water.

The portage you did just added some character and made the trip more adventurous...that's how I always look at it anyway :)

Thanks for all the excellent advice on that portage. My trip started before I got most of the advice so, unfortunately, I took the left side (coming from Crooked) (west side) new trail along the hillside which was really horrible!!! We had to pass the canoe and packs hand to hand up and down the very steep parts. Glad to know there is an alternate route along the right/east side.

We just did the 1050 out of Argo A couple weeks ago. Much of the south part is still flooded by the beaver pond. Here is what we did - which I recommend doing because it worked well. First, we portaged over the good trail out of Argo to a point a little bit (10 rods) after the trail started skirting the flooded area. We stopped carrying when the old trail was obviously flooded. There's a new trail going up the cliff side there that would be very hard to carry, so we decided not to do that. Instead, we loaded up the canoe and floated our gear maybe 20 rods (?) until the good old trail emerged out of the water again. Then we carried another decent distance until the old trail went into the pond again - this time a much more open part of the pond. At that point we loaded up and paddled a longer distance to the beaver dam. At the dam, you unload on the right side and quickly get on the old trail for a short carry (another 10 rods?) to Crooked. So basically, don't use any newer scrambling trails, just load up the canoe and float as necessary.

It's possible that you might be able to start paddling even closer to Argo, but what looked to be the most promising channel was on the opposite side of the pond and we couldn't see if it was clear that far up. If I were coming from Crooked I might explore that, but didn't think it was worth loading up unnecessarily for something that might not work coming from the Argo direction.

Did that one in 2015 spring and really wasn't bad. From crooked you want to be to the right of the stream, previously the portage was to the left. You can put in at the top of the Beaver Dam, then float until you find the portage...not hard but still seemed long :)

I entered the beaver pond a little bit after the trail hit it and worked my way around snags. This was in 2014 (I think). I heard from friends that the pond is even larger this year.

It might be better now. In 2015, the trail ended in the beaver pond, but you couldn't really paddle because of the downed trees you had to pull over, yet it was too deep to wade. They had rerouted the trail up on the hillside above the pond, but that was very steep.

Thanks for the heads up, it looks like there is a lot of water along that portage. We are set for using that portage so I hope it ends up being ok.

Word of warning though if you are planning to take the 1070 south out of Argo. A few years ago anyway, that one was flooded by beavers and was really nasty.

Thanks Banksiana!

Yes they exist. Nearly all the portages on the Chrismar map are regularly (usually at least one pass a year) maintained by the park.

The picture below is from the Chrismar map. Does anyone know if the portages indicated with the red arrows exist and if either of the portages do exist is either of the portages in passable condition? Or, are they obsolete and more of a bushwack?
