In winter we just drink from the lake.

A couple years ago, we were into a huge slush fest, I remember dipping my water bottle right into my last foot-hole and just kept going.

Back in the day when I did A LOT of cold camping in the BWCA- for water we just drank it straight from a properly placed auger hole over deep water. Most nights- too shot for even a fire so any boiling was not an option. Just a warm drink with your meal from the stove was the only warm drink you got until breakfast. But I do agree- after 3, maybe 4 nights cold camping some form of drying heat is needed. At that's why my group got out of dodge after that time frame! IMO-- you should be OK drinking from the lake straight with common sense but if your going to have a fire might as well boil.

I usually only sled in about 1-1/3 miles and carry in a couple gallons, so no filter and no boil.

Winter camping is dependent upon fire, whether you are cold camping or hot tenting, so it's easy to boil drinking water.

Makes sense, thanks Jaywalker.

Boil, especially if you have a hot tent. It's just real easy to do, and you don't have to worry about your filter freezing or cracking. You can boil a couple pots at a time and always have plenty.

What does everyone do for water? I have a gravity filter and was thinking about finding a branch on shore to hang it on but what about freezing, and filters can't take the freezing. I would be hot tenting.
