Had fair service on Boot and Fourtown last July. I think you will be good for texts at least. It sometimes helps to paddle out in the open away from trees. Don't worry about what other people say, it is absolutely none of their business. I leave mine off, but it was nice to call our outfitter for an early pick up after being cold and wet for 7 days straight with guests that did not appreciate the experience at all.

We spent time on Sandpit a couple of weeks ago and had 4 bars, excellent phone & data reception. Verizon. It was nice as we checked on loved ones who had a baby due any time, and came in handy when a wet cold front moved in and we decided to exit early. Having this availability is an advantage . . . just turn off and leave phones in car or at outfitters if you prefer to be without it.

So......was your trip good and did you connect?

Not Verizon - I have ATT - but one day two weeks ago on north part of Boot, I turned on my phone just to take a couple photos and saw I had one bar and a text from my wife. Replied with one text, but that was it, no service the rest of the time.

ajfairchild: "We stayed on Fairy lake last week. I was appalled to hear one of our members had discovered a hint of 4G. I'm sure you can find spots with coverage can on fourtown. We still had a couple days left on our trip and I needed to decompress before wanting to plug back into society. I left my phone on airplane mode. Was it reassuring having my trip mates check to make sure Iowa was beating Minnesota in football? Yes. Was it nice looking at radar vs. noaa radio? Yes. Did I feel bad for not at least sending my fiance and 3 year old a text saying I was alive? Yes. I suppose it's nice to have lakes with this coverage but it certainly takes away from the remoteness that I seek in the BWCA. "

It only takes away if u turn your phone on. Leave it off and it's not an issue. Tell ur trip mates ahead of time to only turn their phone onto for an emergency. That's a choice u and your trip mates need to decide before you go in. The only reason I need service on this trip is bc week have a new born at home.

My wife had a fairly reliable Verizion signal and called her dad each night from the island site at the north end of Horse Lake back in Aug 2012.

Most of our customers with AT&T or Verizon have been able to get text messages out for most of the bottom halves of Fourtown & Horse and sometimes voice calls too.

I can confirm that I was able to get 4G service on the south end of Boot Lake a couple summers ago about a 1/2 mile from the portage into Fourtown. I turned on my phone to use as a camera (it wasn't in airplane mode) and was shocked to see it. I think I actually made a post to this site from there just for fun, but can't remember for sure. I know I did use it to check the weather, since I could. I did not leave it on to check Fourtown or any other areas, so I can't speak to that exactly.

I had verizon service (text only) on Horse last year. So I would presume you would have the same on Fourtown

I was in that area last year and was able to send text on both fourteen and horse lakes using Verizon service. If I moved up to a high spot I was also able to make a phone call on each. My wife also likes me to check in each day when doing solo trips and I usually use my inreach but since I had service I used the phone.

First, please, I do not want to be lectured about should or should you not use your phone in the bdubs. To each their own. I have taken many trips without service in the past and have no issues.

I now have a new born and the fact I am able to go is great and all my wife asks is that it would nice if I had at least text service. I feel this is a fair trade off with all the work she will be doing home alone. ( I have thought about renting a In Reach etc but prefer the phone as we will not be venturing that deep. )

My phone will be in airplane mode most of the time and used for music, Navionics and to use my phone screen as my fish finder with my Deeper.

We are base camping mid October with my hot tent and stove so a long trip with a lot of portaging doesnt seem wise.

Can any verizon users confirm it works around Fourtown/Mudrow/Horse? The verizon map is kind of spotty there and idk how well to trust it.

I would assume based on the verizon maps Lakes 1-3 have service.

thank you
