I’d highly recommend Stu Osthoff. I’ve been on two trips with him and he’s a great guid - great equipment, great food, great fishing. The emphasis is almost totally on fishing, so if that’s your thing, Stu is the way to go. Coming from California, I had fished a lot for trout in streams and rivers, but I had no clue about how to catch fish in BW lakes. After taking my first trip to BWCA and not having much fishing success, I went with Stu and had the best fishing trip I could imagine. And, it was so easy to just show up and have him take care of everything. As someone else mentioned, a trip with Stu is not for you if you don’t want to work a bit because you’ll be carrying heavy packs over portages at the beginning of the trip. The benefit is fresh food the entire trip, which I think is worth it. But yeah, don’t consider this option is you aren’t up for some heavy paddling and portaging. If you can handle that, I don’t think you’ll find a better guided trip anywhere.

Boundary Waters Guide Service in Ely did a great job for me. Jason, the owner was my guide both trips. Couldn't have asked for a better trip either time. He tailors the trip to whatever kind of trip you want. He's experienced and knowledgeable and just an all around great guide and good person. His company will be the one I use if I ever need those services again.

LaTourel's does. I have used them as an outfitter and have been very happy with them Bob runs a good group there. I know they have guided fishing trips in the BWCA as last June I was talking to one of the guides as he was getting ready to head out. I stupidly said to him that it must be hard to have to bring other groups in all year and not get to go in on his own. He rightly looked at me like I lost my mind and very politely responded that he is in the BWCA more than anyone making their own trips in there. The more I thought about it, could there possibly be a better job? I am sure there are better people to trip with than others but really.....getting paid to be in the BWCA. What was I thinking.....lol Anyway nice company and Bob LaTourel caters to fishing already. Check out his website and bonus...he is a sponsor on this site.

Thank you all. I have a neighbor who wants to take a first-time trip with a guide. I will pass on the above information to him. Thank you again.

I suspect you'll find any of the outfitters will offer this. Are you looking for a fishing wizard or a sherpa?"

With Stu, you are the Sherpa. Don’t worry though, none of his packs are over 80 lbs. haha!
Just about any outfitter should at least guide you to one... One of Spartan1’s most memorable trips was a guided fishing trip. No matter the cost, the learning alone would be worth it. My comment above was in fun... Stu has some quality trips. And one of your more qualified for the area. Adam at Piragis would be my pick, but not sure how much of that he does.

Yeah, offer to pay for a person's share of the permit and I'm sure many would be happy with just that to help you out. It does depend on what you are looking for though. If you just want a guide to show you some good places to go and give you some tips than a member would be perfect. If you want someone to rig up your lines, provide the tackle, cook your food, and do more than their share of the portaging, then you want to hire someone.

What you targeting? What time of year are you going? Is your tripping date flexible?

There are some listed under the Outfitters tab above; two are in the Ely area.

I know that Piragis has guides available for private trips and runs some set up guided trips that you can sign up for. I imagine that other outfitters do this as well. I would call around and ask about some way to fulfill your goals.
