When I first read this headline, "Voyageur without pants," I figured someone caught John or Lynn from VNO going to the bathroom in the woods!!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! :)

Some thread titles sound like band names to me...this one sounds like an the name of an album.

I noticed that too Brad. Made me stop and think a little while.

quote schweady: "June 2012 update:
We were traveling through Two Harbors again last month and noted that Pierre, the Voyageur With No Pants, is now upright and has been provided with new feet, a paddle which is very true to the original, and half of a tiny birch bark canoe. The light pole behind him is annoyingly obtrusive, but he does sport a fresh coat of paint and is looking quite handsome. The Earthwood Inn website announces: "Now with a spinning head and glowing eyes!" (I continued to respect my wife's demands that I not perform a more intrusive examination, so that feature remains known to Pierre alone.)

Hey cool I got my paddle back.

An update on Pierre:

We were traveling through Two Harbors on Saturday and stopped to check on The Voyageur With No Pants. He seemed to be resting comfortably, even without his head (inside, similarly reclining) or feet (destroyed in the move). Since I was with the Mrs., I did not feel it prudent to risk the inevitable comparisons which were sure to follow a verification of Pierre's private anatomical features...

Here is the latest story from the Chronicle covering "Pierre". Looks like a paddle is coming back. Pierre

quote mooseplums: "Anyone know how old "Pierre" is? I remember an old photo that my mother has, that was taken when she was a kid. I'm guessing circa 1950."

When the lot it stands on was first sold, there was a story in the Chronicle telling the history. The story has been archived but from what I remember was that Pierre was being built it 1959. It was placed next to the long gone roadside stand in 1960. The companion story to the one above also said 1960.

In the book "The Colossus of Roads, Myth and Symbol along the American Highway" (Marling, Karal Ann. 1984. University of Minnesota Press), Pierre the Talking Voyageur is dated to 1959. There is also a color photo of him holding a paddle. Unfortunately, there is no back story provided in the book. On the internet, there is this blurb. .

quote snakecharmer: "I wonder if cowdoc has "visited" Pierre :)" Not sure about that, but I did, and yes he was anatomically correct..(drawn in with a sharpie)

We may need to lobby the new owners to ensure that Pierre is re-outfitted with a paddle rather than an axe. In the article, Eric Potts and Sandra Fritz talk about restoring Pierre to his original glory, but then this:

"Fritz said there is still debate going on with her husband about bringing a paddle back to his right hand. It was stolen a few years ago. She said he might look odd with a paddle on dry land, and suggested an axe."

Perhaps she needs to read some of this site's axe/no axe posts...

Bannock, you should be able to see it from both the expressway and scenic 61. Here is a link. You might have to register to view.

Apparently the owners of the earthwood inn are buying him. Read about it online at the Two Harbors News Chronicle. I'm on my phone or I'd post a link.

Will it still be on HWY 61?
inspector13 02/14/2011 09:31AM

I wonder if it will be harder for pranksters to tie pink balloons under his tunic over at the Earthwood.

kiwifish 02/13/2011 09:20PM
Isn't it obvious??? It's actually a trojan horse type cell phone tower being used by AT&T - they are just moving it a bit...can you hear me now?

maybe. but I am probably one of the few people who actually miss not having the chance to take my kids to visit him :( I remember "Paul Bunyanland" as a child.

How'd ya like to report what you did that day at work... Severed the body from the pants of a giant voyageur... I can hear it now.

??????????????????????

I just drove through Two Harbors this evening. The "Voyageur without pants" was lying, decaptitated, on a flat bed truck. Not a very dignified end for an icon in Two Harbors.
