Lymphocytosis	06/01/2011 05:59PM West of American point is all open water like magellan said, and even moderate wind can be a huge problem. Even with all the islands its a big lake and I am always reluctant to paddle it. Haven't capsized or died yet though.
magellan10	06/01/2011 03:10PM would agree prevailing wind is typically out of the NW but honestly the wind on that lake never seems to be very consistent from day to day. In terms of being able to hide behind island and points, etc...I would say it depends upon the direction of the wind and what part of the lake you are on and what direction you are headed. If you are on any part of the big lake from American Point to the NE Arm good luck...its a white knuckler on any windy day, especially when the wind is going in any West to East or East to West direction. Now if you are in James Bay, Red Rocks, Devils Walk, or on the south side of the Islands (Englishmen, Munker, Voyageurs, Clark, etc...), anywhere along the Sag Corridor you can find some relief from the wind but it can still be dicey. Then it can become a choice of path of least resistance from A to B or go to long way and hug the shoreline but there are plenty of campsites to take a break or setup camp for the day and wait it out if the wind goes beyond your level of comfort and skill.
inspector13	06/01/2011 01:23PM I’ve canoed the lake, having wind generally coming from the North West. I’ve heard of people becoming wind bound, so I don’t expect the islands will always give protection.
4fishin	06/01/2011 12:09PM For those of you who have been on Sag, how many of you canoed, how many motored? What is the prevailing wind on the lake? If I camp on the islands, will I always be able to get out and shelter myself from the wind using them as a barrier? thanks
