Good job Lonewolf - glad you got it back in shape!

quote BWPaddler: "Replacement looks beautiful, but I haven't paddled with it - gave it back to the guy who broke the first one, ha!

Ordered a graphite one myself this year (www.pinkpaddles.com) from VCO in black, and LOVE IT. It's slightly less bent than my BB (which I like) and so light! Sigh, just another gear area where I was perfectly fine and didn't know what I was missing - and now can never go back to heavy metal/plastic (unbreakable) $20 paddles.

I'll plan to send it to wing night (think I will personally be in the BW that weekend). If someone will actually repair and use it, they can have it; otherwise to your barn wall it will go. You can paddle with it broken a bit just to add your own "story" to it fitgers!"

Thanks BW! Looking forward to adding a story.

Bummer, I did the exact thing to my paddle. As I was closing my back hatch the paddle slid down and got caught in the door. I used Gorilla Glue and clamped it together. After sanding down glue and reapplying Spar (Marine) varnish it was good as new.

I'll take it if not claimed for a better use. I think it will look kind of cool hanging on the side of the old barn on my land next to the old 3-pin XC skis.
I'll pick it up from you at wingnight if that is good.

You must have received the replacement. How did it work out for you?
BWPaddler 09/12/2011 01:37PM
Bump - would someone like this broken paddle for a wood project or to repair themselves?

I thought someone had emailed me about it - cannot find email any more. I'm happy to pass it along now that I have the replacement. I do collect wood for "future projects" but am getting some flack for my definition of "future".

If you can use this and I can find a way to get it to you - it's yours. Would rather think of it in use than in my garage.

NOTE - the broken piece is gone. No clue where.
BWPaddler 06/06/2011 02:12PM
Done. I sent address and offered to pick it up and save shipping, they wrote back and said it would go out the door tomorrow to my doorstep. Wow.
serenityseeker 06/06/2011 01:30PM
Durability would get my vote and a new paddle for free is nothing to shake a stick at.
BWPaddler 06/06/2011 10:13AM
Well, hooray for BB, they did write back and say that it may indeed be a defect and they'd like to offer me a replacement - woot!

Now, they suggested I consider the Espresso model as a possible replacement for the Sun Shadow. Espresso looks to be same price, single kind of wood (black willow), one ounce lighter, 4 less laminates (7 vs 11 I think)... they suggested it because I guess it has a thick wrap of fiberglass giving it a bit more durability.

Looks like the same shape to it though.

Thoughts? I sure like the variety of colors on the SunShadow, but that's not worth a lot sitting in the garage. Guess durability is more important.
BWPaddler 06/03/2011 07:05PM
Good ideas - I'll check the garage and see if that broken piece survived that last cleanout. I asked BB for their opinion without trying to get anything - said I wanted to know if they considered it a defect, even though it was outside warranty period. We'll see what they answer.

Home depote sells marine grade 3m adhesive in a tube for 10.00.

That can be fixed. We have fixed a couple of paddles that have done that to us. With a clean break like that I am guessing that the other piece fits on there pretty nice, so I would glue it with waterproof type glue and revarnish. We had an ash paddle break in almost the same manner and the thing still going strong 6 years later.
photoguy190 06/02/2011 08:48PM
If BB wont help and it really broke on the first trip out, I think it should take some abuse. I would take it back to REI, they will certainly replace it. I just think a 120 paddle should last longer. One of the reasons I shop the higher prices at REI is they stand behind it and will make it right.
BWPaddler 06/02/2011 08:40PM
I did send an inquiry to BB, but their web site states warranty is only good for one year from date of purchase. Given the injury occurred in 2009, I am way beyond that. Though perhaps buying at REI would be helpful.

We'll see what BB says.

Thanks

Contact BB to see if they would warrant it first.

If not, find a wood worker friend, assemble it with biscuits, and epoxy the joint. Fiberglass the face if you're not sure. Unfortunately all this adds weight though.
BWPaddler 06/02/2011 06:11PM
Thanks Bannock, I'll ask and see. Appreciate the feedback.
Bannock 06/02/2011 05:45PM
That is such a clean split, I'd contact BB. The worse they can say is "no". But that just doesn't look right. Especially coming completely off. I could understand a split/crack, but coming completely off? It didn't separate on a lamination. That looks like faulty material. I bet they do something to make it right.

If not, it should be fixable. Probably have to move the material down to the lamination joint and remake that part of the blade.
BWPaddler 06/02/2011 03:48PM
I think using it to push canoe off rocks and getting it stuck between two rocks DOES count as abuse, right? Plus there's lots of scratches on it, not sure from what. I am not dissatisfied with the paddle - should I be? It really did have a short life - but obviously a hard one. The trip it broke on was a 2009 COLD early May trip with snow and a bit of ice. I don't remember if it was used much before that trip or not. Maybe I can check my REI historical orders and find out when I bought it as a gift.

Bannock 06/02/2011 02:08PM
Did it break along a lamination? Was it abused? If it broke along a lamination and wasn't abused it sounds like it may be a workmanship defect. If so, I'd contact BB.
BWPaddler 06/02/2011 01:48PM
Will try to take pics shortly - break was clean, not sure if I have the piece. It was 2009 I think when it broke. Was not me paddling with it (I own the identical twin, which is as yet UNdamaged!).
mwd1976 06/02/2011 12:05PM
Post a pic if you can. I'm guessing it can be fixed but it's hard to tell without seeing it first. Is it a clean break? Have all the pieces?
bellolake 06/02/2011 12:04PM
Email some pics to me and I'll see if I can help.

BB Sun Shadow

Got a basic BB Sun Shadow paddle that broke a while ago... shall I pay you to fix it for me? Give it to you for you to fix and use yourself? use it in the campfire?

Vertical break along one side of the paddle. Shaft is intact. Can take pics if desired. Sitting unused as is.
