09/14/2011 11:31PM Hey All! Sorry for the incredibly late response and lack of communication, but I indeed purchased a Taj 3. I went to an REI shop and they had one on display... needless to say I was sold! The thing is incredibly roomy for being only ~7 lbs. The biggest problem that I've had with many of the tents is the length. I'm 6'3" and I was always scraping the ends of each tent. Already took it on a short weekend outing and it was amazing! Thanks to everyone for all of the input and advice! |

09/09/2011 11:35AM The old standby Timberline2 and now Timberline4 design has been our choice for decades, although my wife is clamoring for one she can stand up in (5'2"). Hard pressed to find a roomy dome tent that comes in under the T4's packed size and weight. |

09/08/2011 10:04PM Welcome Bear, Who makes this Taj and Hoodoo? I have been doing some off and on tent "snooping" the last couple months and do not recall seeing these. I am inline with kanoes on the hex style. My 16 year old Kelty is hex and I love the little extra corners to stash stuff. It is time to turn it into a "kid" tent for state park camping though. Seems most of the tents I have looked at are all square or rectangular. If I have to go with a square, I definatetly want two doors and two vestibules. I will also take on the extra weight for a 3 or 4 person tent for the extra room. I have found a few that I like. They are North Face (Rock w/1 vestibule), Kelty (Hulu w/1 vestibule) and Eureka Apex, MSR Mutha Hubba. It will be a long search I'm sure! |

09/08/2011 07:15PM I like our Taj 3, and use it for two person backpacking. For canoeing, where weight is not as great an issue, we use a 4 person Timberline (actually and Alpine Meadows). The extra room is worth the extra weight. |

07/15/2011 08:53AM I love my MSR Mutha Hubba tent for two people (+dog). Plenty of space, good ventilation, sturdy, and light.

07/15/2011 08:43AM i am a recent taj 3 convert here. i have only had it on one trip but it got a good run through on the wind and rain front. everything that has been said is very true, good use of floor space walls seem almost vertical when you are inside, nice gear storage, not the lightest thing on the market but for the bw it is 'the best' 2 person tent out there. my only negative is with the vestibule doors dripping into the tent when opened in the rain, but the way they open allows you to stand up when in the vestibule, so its a trade off. |

07/14/2011 07:55PM I think the best 2-man tent is a good, light 4 man tent. I have a 3-person tent and it's fine for me and my 10 y.o. son or maybe with a lady friend, where I don't mind gettin' cozy, but if I'm sharing a tent with another guy, I prefer the space of a 4 man tent. |

07/11/2011 10:49PM i was late but bearrope you wont be dissapointed! I have had my taj for 3 years and still as strong as a house. I have been through some super bad storms were the other people we camped with had there tent fold in on it self and are taj didnt flich. Its alittle heavy but I dont think theres a better tent!!! |

07/11/2011 08:05AM Similar tent, slightly bigger, is Kelty teton 4. We have used these a lot in scouts, very durable, waterproof, etc. Campmor has them on sale right now for $129, a great price for a really solid tent. 3 people easily fit, palace for two. |

07/09/2011 11:09PM If weight is not much of an issue you might want to consider a 4 person tent. Take a day and crawl inside a few at the store. Fiberglass poles are heavier and tend to split with age. There are outfitters selling used. my two cents Jrlatt |

07/09/2011 08:24PM I have an Alps Mystique 2 and an Alps Chaos 3. The mystique is more of a backpack tent, you can sleep 2 people in reasonable comfort, but there will be no card games. I took the Chaos to the BW, it did great, but one morning we did have some condensation. I'm not sure what WOULDN'T have had condensation that particular morning, but it all ran down the fly and didn't drip into the tent. A lot of guys around this board like the Taj and Kelty Gunnison 3.5. This is a tough issue, I'd go with the Taj based on what these guys say, even though that's not what I did, if that makes any sense...;-) |

07/09/2011 04:49PM Welcome to the board BearRope. I can highly recommed a Asolo Velocity 3 for a 2 person tent. Great design, excellent ventilation, 2 doors & vestibules. You can get them cheaper than the Taj by quite a bit and the Hoodoo by a 5 spot. The only thing you will have to figure out is a ground cloth. But a cheap piece of painters plastic or Tyvek will be fine. I use an old one from a previous tent. Good luck with your purchase. Asolo |

07/09/2011 03:47PM I would say go with the Taj. Reasons: 1 both doors open to the side (they are D shaped) and dont fall into the mud; on the HooDoo the back door falls downward 2 the door placement makes each camper's ingress and egress easier; on the HooDoo both campers will most pften use the front door so one guy will usually have to go over the other guy's feet 3 cargo storage is bigger and better designed 4 the pole structure seems to me to be more stable with less potential for failure 5 a lot of folks on this site really like the Taj and it has really been put through its paces in the BW environment The Taj only weighs about .3kg more. |

07/09/2011 03:45PM Take a look at the REI Quarter Done 3T Plus. I have 3 Quarter Dome tents and think REI has done a good job with these tents. The Quarter Dome 3T Plus is a nice tent for 2 people, 2 doors and vestibules. The weight/ price ratio can't be beat if you buy it when it's on sale. |

07/09/2011 03:15PM I bought a Taj 3 based on kanoes recommendation and have not been disappointed. It fits 2 people well yet allowing for gear storage inside. For the money I think it's a great tent. After I bought one I bought another for my boys. |

07/09/2011 03:08PM welcome bear! i like the taj. the funky floor shape makes it a great 2 person tent. unlike a rectangular tent, the modified hex shape of the taj gives you little nooks and crannies to store odd and ends. its very airy inside as the sides dont crowd you very much. i think it breathes very well too. im sure others will chime in...its a very popular tent. i dont like end entry tents, even if they do have two doors. its just easier to get out with side doors as opposed to end ones. |

07/09/2011 03:03PM Hi All, I've been doing a considerable amount of research into a new tent and am coming up with mixed reviews on every page. I've been leading more toward the Hoodoo 3 and the Taj 3 (which it appears can still be purchased). I like the vestibule on the Hoodoo, but being a rather tall person, I've been leaning more towards the Taj's floor space. Considering the location, I have had problems with condensation with past tents, so that is another key factor. I could really care less about the weight... I'm still young and if another pound or two could mean the difference between a better overall tent, so be it. I am not set on the Hoodoo or Taj; I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance! |
