11/11/2011 03:36PM I have never hiked the SHT in April but my buds and I usually hit opening trout season in mid April and the snow can be pretty deep away from the big lake. Many river trails were not passable without snowshoes. I would love to try it that time of year but be ready for snow, cold and more cold. I think I would wait till first of May for a trip like this. Don't get me wrong here, I love to winter camp and snowshoe but this does not sound like that kind of trip. I like early May because it will still be mostly cool, bugs not a major problem yet and most of snow will be gone. Plus not a lot of competion for campsites. |

10/26/2011 12:09PM It all depends on where you go.I was in Tettegouche in April a few years ago. On the north side of the ridge I was post holing for a few miles. On the ridge or the south side it was snow free. |

10/25/2011 05:12PM Watch the weather. NOAA has got a website that maps snow depth. I went late April a number of years ago and the snow was still nearly a foot deep throughout the trip. |

10/25/2011 12:27PM Mid-April is fine if you're okay with wet spots. Mid-May is quite a bit more likely to be dry, and late May is downright lovely. |

10/25/2011 09:28AM If you don’t mind patches of snow and wet trail conditions, mid April would be OK. Spring can be iffy on the trail though. Some years there can still be snow in the deeper shaded sections of trail in mid April. It should all be gone by the first week in May. Temperature can dip below freezing throughout May also. You may want to check trail conditions that are updated on the SHT website when the time approaches, since every couple years the thaw seems to take out a bridge. SHTA website |

10/24/2011 10:44PM What would be the earliest time you would do the SHT for three season style camping? I don't mind a little snow on the ground, but I'm not prepared to winter camp it. I'm coming home to MN from 5 years in Colorado with the Army and would like to start school in the summer so I will have from January to May to get it done. I'm thinking mid April? |
