05/08/2012 09:47PM Jigs and leeches or minnows (gulp) would work. Wool socks, lightweight long underwear, knit hat, light gloves might be more important. Check the Ely temps on line for the lows of the day and remember to then factor in rain and windchill...50 degrees in the wind can get pretty chilly. |

05/08/2012 08:04PM Well the time for my trip is rapidly approaching as a week and some odd hours from now we will be departing! I am begining to gather my things together and it looks to be a great trip. Any more advice you guys have got for me? Fishing tips? (Can't decide what to bring for bait, leeches, minnows, or night crawlers?) Ideally nightcrawlers would work as my dad goes to Lac Des Mille Lacs in Canada next week so we have hundreds of nightcrawlers right now! |

05/02/2012 07:14PM Our trip last September was a short one and was only on Kawishiwi, Square and Kawasachong. If you would like to see photos of what that area looked like before the fire, check out my trip report entitled "In Our Minds It's Still There". It will look very different now. I am sure it will have its own kind of beauty, but it will be different. We were there just a couple days before the firestorm descended down into Kawasachong and Square. Good luck. I hope you have good weather and have a great trip. Take wool socks! (I tell everyone that!) |

05/02/2012 07:07PM I did this exact route when I was in high school a few years ago with my gym teacher. Its a nice area! We did pretty well fishing and it was a great trip. However I've been on Malberg twice and fished it for several hours each time and caught one small bass in like 7 hours combined fishing. I'm no slouch when it comes to fishing either. I made a trip report for my brother and my trip report from last summer. Its called Sasquatch on the Kawishwi. Have a fun time! Theres a nice cliff jump spot in th Malberg narrows too. |

02/14/2012 09:25PM My only advice would be to make sure and have quality rain gear. It will probably be on the cold side in May and nothing will ruin a trip faster than being cold and wet. And like the others have said, have a sense of humor about stuff when it happens, cuz it will happen! |

02/14/2012 09:14PM Reread Kanoes advice. Plan on being quiet...you'll see a lot more and not irritate other people. Have a signal (nonverbal) to be quiet, then point at whatever. Be quiet on the water, on the portages, and in camp. Actually keep a diary and bring it up to date at lunch and evening...so much happens, you forget it in 5 days. Then read it back to people on the way home. Record the entry point and the lakes...30 years later you will want to know, or you son or daughter will. |

02/14/2012 07:16PM just this. enjoy every minute. smile at crappy weather and high winds. laugh if fishing sucks. wonder at the beauty. take many many photos. write down your observations and thoughts so you can publish a trip report here. be proud of yourself when a portage kicks your a$$. have a great adventure! oh yeah...beware of the polly bear too. :) |

02/14/2012 07:04PM Hey guys, I've been following the site lately and am looking for any advice I can get. I'm in high school and every year a couple teachers take a group of senior up the the BWCA. We will be there May 16-20 and just decided on our route. I believe our entry point is #37 (Kawishiwi Lake. We will be going from Kawishiwi to Square and on to Kawasaschong on our first day and likely staying here for the night. On Day 2 we will bbe going into Townline then to Polly and on to Koma. We will be staying on Koma then for the night and have a lay over day on Koma for Day 3. Day 4 and 5 will be spent traveling back to Kawishiwi. I am an avid fisherman and am really looking forward to this trip. From what I hear Malberg is very good and will likely be our destination for the layover day to hopefully tie into some smallies and walleyes. This will be my very first trip into the BWCA so any advice/tips you guys can give would be great. Anything from fishing to camping to canoeing to portaging, everything will help!! |
