I think that looks like a pretty reasonable list. I have never need a base layer during the day that time of year but I like one to sleep in. For shirts I like these, I take two. I've worn a tee shirt maybe once.

You do want a hat.

+1

2 Years ago we went in August....man for the wind and cold. One just never knows.

I laughed so hard aw brown, I wish someone would take kids like that out in the wilderness, or maybe not on second thought.
nctry 03/30/2012 10:13PM
BananaHammock, I hope you have awesome weather... Kind of because I'm going in the day after and I want it too. :) I'd add to have a change of clothes in the car for when you come out. I like jumping back into the old jeans... Clean and dry! I'm going to be ready for everything, but I'll be in a bit longer myself. I think I'll be seeing hard frost before I get out.

When basketball shorts were mentioned, I envisioned the things the kids wear these days......Crotch at the knees, bottom of the shorts down at your ankles, lead weight in the hem.......I wondered, who the heck would wear something like that out in the woods!

quote BananaHammock: "Thanks for the input everyone, greatly appreciate but i am curious, why bathing suit over basketball shorts? Thats what the basketball shorts are for and they can double as something to sleep in and worse case scenario an extra pair of underwear. Bandanas, or toilet paper as some of you call them, i will be bringing. Do you bring a small towel to dry off into bw? or just use a shirt or something?"
Well, I was the one who mentioned the swim suit, and that was perhaps over-projecting some personal preference. Bring what you like, but I like multi-purpose. The only short pants I have along are the zipped-off ones and the swim togs. If you swim/wash up in BB shorts, fine. I don't care to know what you sleep in. :)

My towel is an REI Multi Towel Lite XL. (Smaller size might have been okay, too, but the wife insisted and I bought us a pair in the larger size.) Less space and weight than the old terry cloth face towel I used to bring.

You're covered - check the forecast and adjust

Weather

Looks like if you're ready for anything between 22 and 97 degrees, you've got it just about all covered:).
awbrown 03/29/2012 08:09PM
Sounds like you have things pretty well covered. I'd recommend some Smartwool or similar socks, not cotton. Take a swimsuit in place of the Basketball shorts.

I always bring along a couple of large bandana's. They serve so many purposes. I generally keep one around my neck, but a buddy of mine hangs one from a belt loop.

August can, and usually is a very nice month to trip. The bugs are normally less, the water is pleasant, and the weather is usually pleasant (no guarantees on any of the above generalizations).

I hope you have a wonderful time.....and remember to slow down and enjoy yourself. It's not intended to be a sprint.

I've run into 80 degree days and 30 degree nights in the BWCA at that time of year. Be prepared. That said, your gear list looks pretty good. I would add a baklava for sleeping on those cold nights.
bhouse46 03/29/2012 12:01PM
Pretty well covered by others and your plans. Unless you work outside remember you will be out in the sun/elements so consider a long sleeve light shirt that wicks and blocks some of the sun, hat with brim and I love the bandana around the neck to block the burn.

Clothing is an area that I have learned to be minimalist. (Leaves more room for fishing stuff.)

quote BananaHammock: "2 pair convertable quick dry pants"leave one at home
quote BananaHammock: "1 long sleeve, 1 short sleave shirt made of the material that wicks away moisture"sure. my short sleeve is a wicking-type tshirt. I do pack a 2nd tshirt
quote BananaHammock: "1 fleece jacket"sure. microfleece hoodie, perhaps
quote BananaHammock: "1 pair thermals top, bottoms"leave at home. Layering on the rain suit/life jacket is more than enough
quote BananaHammock: "2 or 3 pair socks? and not sure as far as material yet on this one"or 5-6 pair. make 'em SmartWool
quote BananaHammock: "1 pair OTB ohdin or abyss 8 inch boots"whatever you portage in
quote BananaHammock: "1 pair water shoes"whatever is comfortable in camp
quote BananaHammock: "2 pair boxer brief<---keeps the balls johnson happy while hiking, but not too happy"no comment except they are lightweight and 3-5 pair isn't excessive
quote BananaHammock: "Rain gear"suit and pants. that makes the 2nd pair, above, redundant
quote BananaHammock: "one pair basketball shorts"switch for swim suit or leave at home
quote BananaHammock: "a pair of gloves"sure
quote BananaHammock: "a hat"sure
quote BananaHammock: "a warm cap just in case"sure. nice for sleeping, if nothing else

I could possibly be wearing everything I brought, above, and then would have only the spare tshirt, underwear, and socks in the pack.

Just how I would do it, of course, but we've tripped during August around 15-20 times and this has worked during all temperature extremes.
Savage Voyageur 03/29/2012 11:16AM
That depends, I have had hot humid 85 deg days and cold rainy 40 deg days. Watch the forecast and then pack. You will want some warm clothes for after dark.
walllee 03/29/2012 10:43AM
I do not even follow the forecast. Been burnt to many times. I pack for 20 degrees to 90 degrees for every trip.
shsylvester 03/29/2012 10:28AM

For five days or fifty: Two icebreaker T-shirts, One long sleeve smart wool, Bug shirt, Fleece top, Two pair underwear, Long underwear bottom, Tilley hat, Two liner socks, two pair wool socks (one wet, one dry, moccasins, Redwing Boots, Long Pants, Shorts, Down vest or jacket, Rain Jacket, Rain Pants, Two bandanas.

The brand names are not important, of course, but generally the above will keep you warm, dry and reasonably clean.
mc2mens 03/29/2012 10:26AM
Yep - sounds like you have it covered.
boonie 03/29/2012 08:56AM
I usually go to weather.com to check the averages for the time period of my trip. It also lists the record high and low for that week and I just prepare with enough layers for everything in-between. Sounds like you have the bases pretty well covered.
BananaHammock 03/29/2012 08:21AM
I am taking my first trip into the boundary water this august, our entry point is magnetic lake and the date is august 19-26th maybe longer if we decide we dont want to go back to the real world and work, only 143 days away :). Being my first trip, I get to buy a bunch of new toys :) :) :). I am just starting to look at what I want to bring for clothing, and I am curious what others like to pack for BW in late August. I am from Northern IL and our August is ussually still hotter than the dickens, and I am not nessesarilly expecting that from northern MN. I am thinking no more than 2 pairs of clothing for the trip, the idea is have clean to wear and wash the other pair. Plus, its going to be 4 men so if we stink a little who cares. So here is what i have so far, 2 pair convertable quick dry pants, 1 long sleve/1 short sleave shirt made of the material that wicks away moisture, 1 fleece jacket, 1 pair thermals top/bottoms, 2 or 3 pair socks? and not sure as far as material yet on this one. 1 pair OTB ohdin or abyss 8" boots, 1 pair water shoes, 2 pair boxer brief<---keeps the balls johnson happy while hiking, but not too happy. Rain gear, one pair basketball shorts, and i think that would be all i pretty much will want besides maybe a pair of gloves and a hat and a warm cap just in case.
