Consider looking at the True North Boot from Empire Wool and Canvas. This is a Mukluk with infinite insulation possibilities. I have had mine for several seasons and have been very happy. This is the boot I wear while traveling into the bush in the Winter.

I have a pair of CCS Mukluks, amazingly warm. I have the Mukmates to go with them. Not meant to be worn around town, just in the snow and ice of the backwoods, where they they are designed for. Coldest I have used them is around -15, toasty tootsies.

I can only say I never heard a bad word about either. I know Stegers have made them for years, they are not rookies.

I have had my steger mucks for many years and they have held up well. I have both the reflective and the wool inserts. I have applied water proofing to them several times and it works fairly well. As stated, it is best if you can go and try them on because it is easy to get the wrong size if you guess. One thing I like about my Steger is that even after 13 years, they will still repair them at no charge if a tie strap breaks, that has happened twice in 13 years. Luv them!!!

Yes, I do use multiple insoles. I just thought the ones that came with the boots were sort of under par. I wore the reflective ones on one trip and in one day all the bubbles on the pressure points on the foot bed were popped then by another few days the reflective stuff wore off. So I just started cutting my own foot beds out of an old military surplus closed cell foam sleeping pad that I had laying around. This took care of the issue and I could not be happier with the boots.

quote catfish72: " The drawbacks I found on the Steger muks are the lack good insulation from the bottom"
For very cold temperatures they recommend using multiple insoles, eg. A reflectix one, a wool one, then a sheepskin one. That's one of the reasons you buy them big.

let me start by saying love my Steger mukluks! or I should say I have grown to love my Steger mukluks.I own a pair of the arctic and a pair if the Yukon. after some modifications I do believe they are the perfect winter boot for just about any thing you can dream up. I have never seen or known anyone with CCS muks so I can not speak on those. The drawbacks I found on the Steger muks are the lack good insulation from the bottom and they are not at all water proof. both of witch issues I took care of on my own. the other thing has nothing to do with the boot it self but the trying to get the proper size. I suggest going to the store if you can and try a few sizes on. If you end up going with the Steger's and you are ordering online read the sizing part. they are not kidding when it says you should order at least one size up, possibly two. otherwise the boots are super comfortable and durable. I use them for all the things you mentioned and more. also, I do believe I have read some other discussions on this forum you can search for what others have said about their mukluks in the search bar. you may find something. or I could be wrong.

Hi There! I posted this in the gear section as well but I think I will get more answers here. Sorry for the double post. I am looking for a pair of mukluks to buy for the winter. My uses will include ice fishing, winter camping, snowshoeing, and some casual wear. I have heard great things about Stegers and have many friends that own a pair. I actually received a pair of their camuks for a gift but they are too small and I don't really care for the camo. Looking at their arctic model. I have also looked into the CCS mukluks. I have a hybrid pack from CCS and used their tarps before. Awesome stuff.... So how do they compare? Pros and cons to each? Which is more durable and warmer? 400 grams of thinsulate for the CCS vs 9mm wool felt on Stegers? Any info from owners of each and both would be great!!!

THANKS!
