Yes. Just a few miles out of Lancaster.

quote Fearlessleader: "Wow. Deja vu all over again.
We live about 30 miles south of Columbus and had started our BWCA trip on the10th. Your description of the wind brought back memories of what we experienced beginning our trip. Like you, we knew nothing about events until our son and a nephew who had driven up met us out on the lakes.
By the time we exited the media had put a moratorium on showing video of the collapse and we didn't see it until the one year anniversary. "

30 miles south of Columbus, do you live by Lancaster?

quote paddlinjoe: "Thanks for the well written report (and bumping). I had to smile at the note about running out of film in a camera, and issue that hasn't crossed my mind in a decade. Your descripion of seeing the flags at half staff gave me chills. My father started a trip into the Quetico on the 12th that year. The contemplation and conversation with his group was very reflective on that trip."

Now you just have to make sure you have enough battery :)

quote TomT: "I like how you made the decision to go solo. I would do the same in a heartbeat. What island were you on? Fishing was real good for that time of year. I stayed 3 nights in 2015 at the north end of the big island right when you come in to North Bay from Burke. We then moved to the north end for 3 nights and had good fishing on the east side of the lake.

I was also doing a solo around that time in Quetico. I went through LaTourelles up into Sarah and McIntyre for 8 nights and came out on the 10th. I drove home to Chicago that day/night and because I took the next day off of work I was home to see it all unfold on TV. I'll never forget it.

"

I was on that same campsite.

I wasn't paddling, but I was backpacking in Colorado in September of 2001. Fortunately, our trip ended on the 9th and we flew home on the 10th. When I woke up on the 11th, it took me several hours of processing what was happening to the world and the country before the impact filtered down to my personal level - if we had made the reservation one day later, how different my life could have been.

Of course, no flights from Albuquerque to Dallas were hijacked, but still.

Another time we were backpacking in Colorado when the far less earth-shattering but no less "WTF-inducing" news came out that OJ Simpson was wanted for murdering Nicole and Ron.

Now, whenever we exit the wilderness, the first thing we do is find news talk radio to see if any earth-shattering events had taken place whilst we were in wilderness blissful ignorance.

quote Savage Voyageur: "Great report Mike, I like how you write. I would like to ask a couple of questions, Did you use a leader with the Lucky 13? I would think you would be afraid to loose it if you did not use a leader. One more question, How did you fish the lucky 13, slow retrieve, fast retrieve, pop the lure, thanks for your help. "

I use a thin titanium leader with the lure. 6 inches I think it is. You fish the lure just like a Pop-R. Pop....Pop....Pause.

Thanks for the report, Mike. It must have been a surreal end to your first solo.

I enjoyed reading your trip report. I made so many personal connections during the read. I could picture all the places you were on your trip because that is where we have traveled through the past few years. I also loved all the fishing details. But the biggest connection was the mention of being totally closed off from the real world. As we exited the Q this past year, we were told of the death of our son's 1/2 brother (a drowning victim) and the death of the older gentleman in the Q. I always loved the fact that when you are in the wilderness you are truly shut off from the real world. However, when the real world slaps you in the face upon return, it is quite harsh. I prefer the gentle slide back into reality. We all remember where we were that morning. I wish my memory was as sweet as yours...being alone in the Q with nature. Thanks for the report.
