If I were you, I would join up with the fine folks who attend the Winter Camping Rendezvous in early February.

I have camped with them 4 or 5 years and have learned a lot each time. The place they camp is a mini-BWCA just over the border in Wisconsin.

You could go on one of our trips but you would need to do a training hike and trip first...we pre-approve all our campers for summer and winter trips, and have taken many "rookies" summer and winter.

There is a large group of hammock hangers that camp on the SHT (Superior Hiking Trail) every January.

It started with five guys the first year but, has grown to a large, diverse group.

Here's a link to the 2014 Frozen Butt Hang on HammockForums.net

They welcome "ground dwellers" and have a wealth of experience with cold weather camping.

Hello Jay,
I got your email, and I very very sincerely appreciate you taking your time to reply. I will take your suggestions dearly and do my best to comply.

One problem though, after living in MN for 4-5 years, I had to move to CA for job, and currently I do not have a chance for backyard camping in winter time. That's why I was wondering if I could join a seasoned group to be their apprentice and learn from them. But I will try to be active here and do my best to get as much as information possible.

Thank you for your time and for your reply once again.

Hey there, Soloalaskan. Welcome to the forum. I saw on the original post someone already steered you toward the wintertrekking.com site, which is a real bastion of winter camping know how. I'll take it further and suggest you watch a bunch of videos by the same guy, Hoop, which can be found on YouTube under wintertrekker (note slightly different name). He's probably got 30-50 short videos on winter camping, all of which have some educational aspects. Another great one to watch for information and motivation is Snowwalkers by Lure of the North. Hope these help!

Hello everyone,
I had posted this in another topic, and I finally found the right place to post this.

I thought this would be the best place to re-post this.

(if you had read my previous post, I apologize, this is copy/paste from it!)

I have been camping in BWCA since 2009, and have been to BWCA for 3-4 days long overnight trips 7 times now with a group of 6 max, and group of 2 people min. I usually lead (or helped to lead) groups (especially last two trips). I am good with navigation, woodsmanship, hard labour and so on. Good with fire as well, I am usually the fireman of the group, wood chopper etc ...

Since I was a kid (thanks to my dad who was in love with native american culture and their way of living and their relationship with wolves and nature), I grew up with that dream, and love of wilderness in me. I have a dream to go and live by the land in Alaska in winter time and I want to do it at one stage of my life. Maybe for couple of weeks, may be for a month, I don't know, but I want to start from somewhere and I think BWCA is the best place. I want to have my winter training (for multiple years) to be in BWCA with a seasoned group that I can learn and contribute.

Basically, through this email, (if possible) I am looking to join a winter camping group of 4-5 people this Jan 2016.

A little bit about myself: I am 33yo, graduate of UMN with a phd in engineering and currently serving as a professor in northern CA.

I would be very happy to get in touch with groups who are willing to take some people on board, and I am more than willing to talk about it.

If interested and/or if have one spot for me for the trip in sometime Jan 2016, let me know. I will be happy to talk.

My availability in Jan is between 04-22 Jan 2016.

Sincerely,
KT - (solo.alaskan@gmail.com)
