The only beach I know of on Quetico Lake is the one on that Isthmus in the SW part of the lake, which also has a drag-over portage to go to Badwater entry. I wouldn't want to camp there myself just because it gets traffic through it. Is there another beach on that lake?

Pickeral has nice beaches around The Pines. Jean has sand beaches on the south-central shore, and Jean is a great fishing lake. Cache Lake has a beach along the NE shore. Those are all the ones I know of in the park.

depending on the day you plan to leave canada, the line at the border crossing at i.f. can be crazy. i've sat there for two hours more than once. it's been shorter every time i've got through grand portage. now, we enter i.f. and then leave via g.p. if exiting on a weekend, especially a sunday. the drive east and through thunder bay is much quicker if the line at i.f. is as long as it can be. just my .02.

Not sure what your questions are. Sturgeon can be accessed from any of the northern entry points. There are multiple sand beaches on Quetico, Pickeral, and Batch lakes along with multiple campsites with 'jumping rocks '. You don't need to go to Sturgeon for these features.

Beautiful picture of the falls!

We did exactly the trip described by HighnDry 2 years ago, although counterclockwise. 3 days going in and 2 days back out. We took a layover day on Russell, viewed the bottom of Grand Rapids below Chatterton Falls and did a half day day trip to fish under Splitrock Falls. A very nice trip and you can pick up your trip papers at the park office in Atikokan when the open at 7:30. A very short drive to the Nym launch.
We drove up through Duluth and stayed at a motel in International Falls. Shorter that way. Coming back out, I highly recommend taking the extra hour or so to go east and see Kakabeka Falls, which is right on the road and beautiful. Special money saving tip: Since you have already paid for an Ontario Park the morning you come out, just show the papers to the office at K Falls for a free entry.

To answer the canoe question, if there is more than one persin portaging the boat then this shouldn't be a problem. A couple of these portages are iver 100 rods such as the Dore carry. If you loop back out, the carries from Walter. Elizabeth and Jessex are in the 140s to 160 range. A lonv boat could be tiresome for one but two would certainly make it easier. Just my two cents.

I agree with inspector13 on the logistics of passing through Intl. Falls.
Typically, an entry through Bhouse to reach Q Lake is easiest. I usually approach from Nym, teavel through Batch and camp in Pick Narrows.
On day 2, portages will carry you into Pine Portage, Dore & Twin to rach upper Sturgeon. Dependking on wind and energy levels, you could make it through the Sturgeon Narrows to the Scripture Isl. area by the end of this day. The route has giod laker fishing, remnants of the logging era, pictos and moose sightings if you are lucky. You can loop out via Lonely, Walter, Jesse, Maria to return to
Batch and eventually Nym.

It is a shorter distance to travel from Duluth to the north side of Quetico (Atikokan) by going through International Falls. This is especially true if you choose to go in at the Beaverhouse entry point. (Quetico Lake)

Thinking of returning to Q for the first time in 25 years. Bringing daughters who love the water. Research shows Sturgeon Lake has great beach. Quetico Lake does too. We are coming in through Duluth. Thoughts on best EP? Last time in the Q we paddled in from Sag. Looks like a long haul to Sturgeon from there.

Questions...
-Assuming you say the best EP is driving to the north side of Q, which is the best route from Duluth...Grand Rapids or International Falls?
-the girls like rock jumping as much as beaches...should we target a Lake other than Sturgeon...Quetico maybe?
-considering doing this Voyageur style = 4 person canoe like the Minnesota IV. We used that on our last trip with the girls. Youngest is 12 so she won't provide a lot of power. This unique solution worked well in BWCA. Does portaging a 23' canoe change your recommendations?

Thanks!
