Planning a late May 2017 trip out of Mudro 22
2 adults, 6 nights
I’m thinking Mudro, Boot, Fairy, Gun up to Friday Bay, back down Crooked to the Falls area Horse River and back to Mudro?
Am I on the right track?
Would love to camp two nights at a great spot.
What are your thoughts?

Stunning area!

Have you been to this EP before?

Gun is a particularily beautiful lake IMO.

You are on the right track. That's a perfect amount of days for this loop. I would plan to camp at 3-4 campsites. Gun, Thursday Bay, Lower Basswood and then Fourtown, Tin Can Mike or Snadpit. Great loop.

Yep, good plan above except if you do have a permit for EP 22, then no camping on Horse.

That is a beautiful route with many great things to see and do. I would run this same route, however, in a counterclockwise direction. The Horse River flows from Horse Lake to Lower Basswood Falls. We fought Horse R. upstream against the flow one day and it was the most strenuous part of our entire trip last May. If we had been going the opposite direction, with the flow, we would have had a much easier time negotiating the rapids and rocks.

Have fun.

Thought I'd throw my .02 in. Last year we stayed on Boot lake late May and I had a blast catching walleye! From my campsite I caught 2 over 6lbs and had a huge fish out front that broke my line 4 times, fun fights but never got a good look at it. There is a small island close to shore past the 2nd campsite, fish between the island and 2 points for great walleye bite.

Edited, wrong lake was listed...Boot is correct lake.

I agree with SE, do it in reverse order so you're going downstream on both rivers.

I've done that route a couple times, I actually prefer taking Sandpit to Jackfish Bay and heading to the falls that way. You get to see the upper falls and avoid the traffic on Horse. (shouldn't have to deal w/ low water though that time of year, and traffic should be lighter though)

How much motor boat traffic could one expect on Jackfish Bay? I am planning the same route for July and I will use Jackfish if the water levels are low.

Better check permits - some of those are getting pretty picked over for May and June. BWCA Permits

I think I've seen a total of 3 boats in that southern portion where they're allowed. Since it's a dead end and work to get there, no real pleasure boaters. They're either sitting still fishing or moving to another fishing spot so shouldn't be much "traffic" if any are around. We've always made it past the no-motor line and camped somewhere above the falls the first night for an easy first day unless it's a NE wind. (rare)
