Hello,

I need to redo the webbing on one of my canoe seats.

Is there a preferred width for the webbing? Is there a preferred brand?

I am thinking of doing a custom orange and blue seat with this lawn chair webbing:

Do you think this webbing will work for a canoe seat?

Other than being ugly it sounds like that would probably work fine. The strapping you linked is probably a bit wide at 3". A canoe seat is a lot smaller than a lawn chair seat.

I use 1.5" webbing for my seats. It's worked out well. I get it from strapworks. Lots of choices (materials, thicknesses, and colors) and good advice on their site about choosing between poly, polypro, and nylon.

Make sure you get something that will not stretch. A buddy of mine cut up an old set of ratchet straps he had..... after an hour you were sitting on the wood frame instead of the straps. I think Polyester straps are the ones that don't stretch as much. Just something to think about.

Thanks for the link to strap works. The lawnchairusa webbing is polypro

It looks like polyester webbing might be best for the canoe seat.

Given the intended usage for this strapping, the term "butt ugly" comes to mind. :>) :>)

I believe I used nylon webbing when I built my canoe and seats. 3 yrs ago and still tight seats. 1.5". I believe most commercial seats are nylon.

I've used lawn chair webbing for canoe seats with great success.

Nylon webbing for canoe seats just suck. It does, argue if you want, but in August my butt doesn't want to be anywhere near them.

My personal all time fav canoe seat is made by a Canadian in his basement, he sells to 4 (mebbe 5) production canoe companies. They look plain, but if your butt is sitting on one of his bench seats you'll appreciate the difference between webbing or lacing. You can order them from Nova Craft or Hamilton Beach canoes.

I completed my seat repair project today.

I went with
1.5 inch polyester webbing from strapworks.

They didn't have the navy blue I was looking for. Their blue did turn out to match the blue color of 1990s era Old Towne canoes though.

I have had many cane and web seats for my canoes. IMO the webbing holds up better. I like the looks of cane but after a couple of years it can deteriorate, especially if you sit on it hard or are not careful. My webbing is black and 1.5 inches as mentioned. It is still in good shape after many years. I think your 3 inch width will work but half that size would likely look better. Good luck in your renovation. JerryG
