As most of you know I'm not a big net guy and usually prefer to use a boga to land my fish. I have a collapsible net which is awesome for backpacking being made of aluminum but ever since that nice laker on Poobah bit the dust after tangling in its mesh I have stopped taking it.

I have decided to get an Orvis Nomad net.........crazytown pricing but I like it. Carbon fiber and fiberglass it comes in under a 1lb.........37" length makes it a mid length net. I really like the rubber mesh which looks like it should baby the fish and not get hooks tangled.

Dimensions of the basket........13" wide x 18" long x 12" deep. Any guesses as to what the largest fish it would accommodate?

Anyway......off to Isle Royale and trout would likely be a focus and a boga might not be the best route to corral them. Hate to wear them out completely.

If anyone is interested in getting a net like this mention the pricing you seen in the most recent Orvis catalog (item #uj13sf) mid length, page 57 where the product comes up at $125.95 and on-line it comes up as $159.........they will honor the catalog price. At that price it will now have to go with me on all my future trips just because.........I will have to rig a spot in the boat where it can stay permanently even on portages yet be easily accessed.

Well the Nomad net showed up. It's made by Another company.....Fish pond (frog pond?) so I went on their website thinking I might have overpaid (ya think!) but nay I actually got a pretty good deal. I never in a million years thought I would drop more than $30 on a net but something clicked in the inner recesses of my fishing brain and I decided rather quickly I wanted one.

And they are truly an excellent piece of gear. There are things which are a means to an end and then there is gear which is a pleasure in and of itself to use. This net definitely fits that description and just picking it up has a certain satisfaction to it. Very well made and light.......sort of like the difference between a carbon fiber paddle and a plastic one. Both will get you down the river but one is just nice to use.

And of course the rubber (not plastic) mesh will gently baby the fish and help release the fragile trout. I figure the net is probably good for up to a 5 to 7 lb fish tops. Anything bigger and the boga will have to come out.

Fishpond makes some quality gear. I have their waist pack for my trout flies and love it. I'm not sure if I could pull the trigger on that net.
