getting jacked for my opener BW trip , always been a fan of bomber crankbaits,(can you tell) yes even in the early spring, lake trout love them, any crawdad color can be $ for smallies. the 2 lower right (bill dance suspenders) are great lures in themselves. most of these are discontinued models/colors only place to find them is ebay.

The Bill dance "Fat free" Bombers.......I have several. Nice trolling lure and will hit over 20' in the larger size. You have an impressive collection Shock.......
I am a big fan of the Bomber long A's with the deep diving lip........Rainbow trout finish is where its at. You can pull them at supersonic speeds and they will erratically wander all over the place. We had some very impressive walleye catches during August on the shield on suspended fish with these.
Bomber makes good strong stuff at reasonable prices. Good luck on your trip!

That's quite a collection. I think it's cool how so many of us use different techniques to powerful effect. I don't think I've ever caught a fish on a Bomber, even though I've owned a few my entire fishing life.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

Just stop it already ;-) With great reluctance I have weeded out nearly all my vast collection of Bomber, Norman, Lucky Craft, Wiggle Wart, etc...... crank baits to travel lighter and farther this year. Showing pics and reinforcing how effective they are is NOT helping. Because I know its MT endorsed, I am taking one (1) large peanut butter jar stuffed with cranks so I'm not empty handed.

Love the peanut butter jar idea, but would you slide them into sleeves or something to prevent one mass tangled lump nightmare? I know in my tack tray, I have hocked some of my son's rubber bands from his ortho appointments to keep each individual lure's front / rear treble pulled together. Seems to help a lot.
Shock, you mention crawdad colors....and I can see you believe in them: green, red, brown, orange (and combinations thereof). What are a couple of the favored (most frequented / confidence baits) craw pattern colors for you in the Bombers?

Counter intuitive, but this works. I started doing it last fall and you're mostly there with the rubber bands in the tray.

Seems to help a lot.my #1 crawdad color (bomber)for smallies would definitely be the chartreuse crawdad, (the dark green crawdad is very good too). for shallower water/wood piles i've had very good success with this fat rap brown crawdad. and the chrome black bomber puts out a ton of flash for all species. and the red has been successful too.

MT , thats 1 of the reason i love the bombers , at any speed they run true and straight, the 8a gets down about 16' with a little bit of speed... the suspending bill dance lures or any suspender , when trolling in a canoe and making turns the lure stays down , pauses then goes has been a great triggering response on fish.

MT endorsed jars are Jiff and Jiff alone and creamy I might add.
I would also endorse using hook bonnets anytime you have lures piled together......wether in a Plano box or peanut butter jar.
And why is that? Well I'm glad you asked.......as per an In -fisherman article I read years ago hooks leave micro scratches on your lures which dull them. They then fail to mimic that "sheen" that most water dwelling critters have. Makes sense to me. Does it matter? I dunno........but I keep stuff as nice as possible without going overboard.
I have done 2 week trips with 8 lures and one outfit and I have done trips with 5 rods and 3 stuffed tackle bags requiring an extra portage......do what you want.

Check out this BWCA.com topic I posted Lightweight and Compact Crankbait Storage
Just rubber band the trebles together as seen in the pic and they'll roll right out individually. Promise. FYI this is not my original idea but, it works very well. The peanut butter jars weigh like 2 oz. empty, their free and your going green all at the same time.
Oh yeah, to stay OT I like Bomber Cranks as well. I have taken crawdad and shad colors in the past and done well. :-)

quote mastertangler: " Their argument was thus (and as I related in my original post suggesting it was not such a great idea to lump lures together including giving the hat tip to In-Fisherman)........that most water critters have a protective coating of sorts (slime). This coating has a bit of a sheen to it. In other words it reflects light. In-Fishermans argument is by piling your lures together, one on top of another, the hook points create micro scratches and dull the lures finish. "
Would bouncing around in a tackle box not do the same thing....?
03/22/2017 09:05AM
Indeed it would. And that is why I generally don't pile lures together......it's those modern hooks which are oh so sharp which are the culprit. Hook bonnets help. But portaging takes it to a whole nother level.
I used to mock one of my fishing pals of years ago who used to keep his lures in the box. I don't go that far but his stuff stayed nice that was for sure.
Does it matter? Heck if I know.......what I do know is I respect the crew at In-Fisherman and at least one of them made an interesting argument which deserves some reflection.

This from the guy endorsing Savage Rats, Shadzillas, Headlock, etc...... Please come on MT. Has someone mentioned this is the fishing forum not stories in short fiction. Don't make up facts to support your misguided criticism of a solid idea for back country fishing. I'm simply passing along a very effective, lightweight and free tackle storage idea.

Point taken......and indeed if you objectively read my initial comments as pertaining to your jar suggestion I used the word "nifty" as my initial reaction. I think it's a good idea. Not withstanding that lures can take a beating and from my perspective steps should be taken to alleviate that IMO. Why is that diffucult to comprehend or understand? Why would that be a cause to be offended?
Having stated that exactly what "facts" am I "making up". A rather curious and quite frankly odd thing to say. I am merely talking fishing and that includes Shadzillas, Savage gear rats and yes Headlocks......the point I am making is do what you want without having to justify yourself to the critics (of which there are many). Want to go light? Been there, done that > yes I did take 8 deep diving crankbaits and one outfit (line counter) on my 2 week trip with Darrel Brauer (A.K.A. kingfisher) wanting to go in as light as possible understanding he liked to travel and that rather quickly. I also understood that he would have a back up rod/reel and in the unlikely event I lost my lure selection or broke a rod. That was a good choice and the trip was exceptional in every aspect.
And if you have any doubts about my ability to bring volume of equipment you can Utube my tackle taken video to WCPP. So I'm unclear as to what works of "fiction" you are referring to.

I'm in this camp with BnD :) I've painfully weeded out lures and baits only to add even more back into my planos several times. I'll have to try the rubber band trick as my lure-tangles are a curse-inducing mess whenever I open the storage container.

I actually have the chartreuse one. Will plan on bringing it this spring.
Which one has taken the most Lake Trout for you?

SammyN the very bottom right(in the pic above^) , bill dance suspending tennessee shad,
1 time i was trolling past a rock pile that dropped off , i decided to let out a little more line, as i was doing that i thought to myself this could trigger a strike , as soon as i closed the bail Wham my rod doubled over #5 laker. the pause and go with deep diving crankbaits can really trigger fish into striking . pic of my top trolling lures.

last fall i lost my favorite BW lure :( (7" blk/gold rapala)^ so i tied on one of my sons smithwicks and did good on them for pike and fishing was slow.
so i purchased these smithwicks(perfect 10 suspenders) and i,m going to surprise the kids with these after we get our permit at the ranger station in grand marais. i,m taking the gold/grape one ;)

My father used to say, "How can a fish take my lure into ITS MOUTH and avoid getting hooked when I can't reach into my tacklebox without having three lures hook me?"
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

I hear ya. I'll make a good faith effort to try a new lure and the jerk at the other end of the boat keeps using one of the lures we always use. He'll catch three fish to my none with the new lure and then I pert near retire that lure for all time.
