Looks like REI has remodeled the Quarterdome tent for this year. I bought one last year, but have yet to use it... debating trying to upgrade somehow, although I know the return policy has changed (maybe sell it). Anyone compared the models?
2016:
- 28.7 sf
- 6.7+6.7 sf vestibules
- 90"x54/44"
- 40" peak height
- 3lb 9oz packaged weight
- 15 denier nylon fly, 30 denier nylon floor
2017:
- 28.7 sf
- 21.5 sf vestibules (assume symmetric? so 10.75 sf each?)
- 88"x52/42" (I guess not significant difference to change total square footage?)
- 42" peak height (2" taller)
- 3lb 12oz packaged weight (3oz heavier this year)
- 15 denier nylon fly, 20 denier nylon floor (floor worries me)
Remodel description says 2017 has: Updated pole architecture increases head and shoulder room by 28% and footbox room by 23%, offering a generous living space where 2 adults can relax and hang out. Dual-stake vestibules (one on each side) are 60% larger than the prior version and easily shelter all your gear from the weather
Vertical sidewalls create spacious elbow room and provide a no-drip entryway.
The extra vestibule room sure sounds good! As does the expanded head and shoulder room... can't quite tell how the poles are different, but I know I still haven't figured out how to re-pack the poles on last year's model after a living room setup, lol.
Thoughts?

2017 version has a 5 way hub for the head end. Not sure what configuration your version is, hub-ed or contrasting color crossed poles. The new version changes are your choice. Spend for a new tent (and the new price is comparable to other same class tents, yes you can find cheaper just not the same feature set or quality), or use your current for a few years.
Far as folding the pole set, best accomplished by trial and error. Not knowing exact set style or how you have tried.

Yeah, the 2016 version has at least a 5-way hub on the head end, lol. Nice small stuff sack for poles and I can't get them back in - got poles on top shelf of my camping closet. Plenty of videos on how to set it up... NONE on how to take it down, lol. Trial and error is right, but if I use it then it doesn't matter much as long as it gets in the pack.

Can't remember why, but I definitely didn't pay full price... PLUS I had some credits from a return, so it FELT like I got the whole thing for under $50 ;) That's what counts, right?

Have you seen it in person?
The vesty size is really really attractive while last year's model is barely serviceable. If you have decent vestys you don't need as much room inside imho.
Walls appear more vertical, but it was a while ago when I set mine up.

quote ozarkpaddler: "2" narrower, huh? I've found it puzzling the way "Two man" tents seem to decrease width seemingly every year and length every few? "
This was especially sneaky, since the square footage was identical. Almost didn't look at the details when I saw that, but sure enough... "shrinkage"!

If you got a great deal all the better. I was just saying at full retail it didn't seem worth it for me.
In the end if it works for you enjoy it!

quote Grandma L: "The Quarter Dome 2 is 2 pounds lighter than the Storm Break but $200 more expensive. They have similar measurements and again - my favorite D shaped doors on the fly and tent.
"
Storm Break has about 2 extra sf and more vesty room definitely. I like that it appears to have fully rectangular floor. But, I gotta shave the poundage I think.

Review of the changes for 2017
It is hard to compare tents without actually having them side by side. The printed specifications may not reflect the design changes (such as the change of the floor from 5 corners to 4), and measurements can vary.
Still no other suggestion for folding the poles, except take the poleset and the bag to an REI, ask for a demonstration.
I do know it makes a difference on my HalfDome how the hubs are pulled from the poleset (as far as packing size).

I bought the 3 person version of this tent, with a footprint, last year. This year's model seems to be about $50+ more expensive if my memory hasn't failed me completely.
I set a goal of losing 10 lbs. this year. I only have 15 left to lose.
