We will be in the BWCAW the first week of August 2017. What fishing gear should we bring to catch Smallmouth Bass? Living in the midwest we have experience with Large Mouth Bass mainly in farm ponds. What suggestions are offered to catch Smallies so that we don't have to rely on the freeze dried meals? Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Calling QM!!! ;)
I would bring hula poppers and zara spooks for top water bass and zulus for subsurface bass. Zulus have a rather specific way of being rigged that Quetico Mike advocates for. Use the search function to get into those specifics.... Also crankbaits and jig + plastics can be efficient for finding small mouth. Truly, many forum members would attest to small mouth eating anything you throw at them. Hope this helps!
Oh and tube jigs might be good but I have little experience with those. I think QM uses tube jigs over zulus for the later half of the season?

# 3 Mepps spinner silver, jig and a leech. That time of year try to find some reefs, have caught my biggest small mouth when fishing for Walleyes on reefs when fishing with a jig and leech, or a crawler .More rock the better. Casting the mepps around island and points should also be productive. There are many other casting lures that would work, you'll get many suggestions here I'm sure.

I'm from N.E. Okla., so I understand the "learning curve". 3 and 4 inch twister tails, and jig heads from 1/8-3/8 oz. will get you past 25 feet. One thing that will be different is water clarity, most lakes are rather startling in clarity! Topwaters work quite good... just remember to make long casts and take advantage of low light(before sunrise, after sunset, cloudy, drizzly). Also, cranks such as a SR9 Shad Rap will get you down to 20 feet...trolling will help finding active areas(catch one, go back and cast grubs in the area). Obtain a topi map of the lake NOW!! And start looking for fast depth changes, points... you know that routine.
