Planning a June family trip out of Lake One, base camping on Insula or Alice. I like to camp at or near an entry point the night before to allow a full day of travel on the first day. Is there any tent camping at or near this entry? I entered here about 12 years ago, but can't recall where we slept the night before. Thanks

I think that Fall Lake Campground is the closest to Lake One.

Good advice from Ducks and Elydog. As they said, Fall lake is the closest NFS Campground and Kawishiwi Lodge is the closest Lodge. Kawishiwi Lodge does have bunk house accomodations. Our women's group has used them in the past and had a good experience.

There are also other NFS campgrounds in the Ely area that are more rustic than Fall Lake. Ely Area NFS Campgrounds We really have had good luck with Birch lake Campground - just a few minutes south of Ely as well as Bearhead State Park.
Voyaguer North Outfitter also has great bunkhouse facilities right in Ely.

Canoe Country has campgrounds at their Moose Lake base (and store, bunk houses, and facilities) and that is not far from EP30 - like 4-5 versus 20+ from Ely and almost as far to Fall Lake. I don't know what other outfitters on Moose have camp grounds. Just depends on how many minutes closer you'd like to be.

My first choice solution since we get to Ely in afternoon is go ahead and enter late and camp first night near EP. That really gives a jump on the first (whole) day's travel.

For a few years in a row Insula was our go to lake. We would camp at Fall Lake. Get your permit the night before. There are showers there with a pass code to let you into the showers in the morning, if you want. We would always bring a second tent and sleeping bags to just throw into the car so we would not have to mess with our bags. This was we could get on the lake as the sun was coming up. It is east to get past the lodge in the dark of the morning so we would time it out so the sun was coming up as we were entering the channel by the lodge. We would end up on Insula shortly after noon. It is a great place to camp the night before.

On all our lake one entries we got a bunkhouse from Kawishiwi Lodge outfitters.
literally on Lake one so makes it easy to be on the water early...
Frank and Nicole have always been great to deal with

Fall Lake looks like my best bet, not too far and cheap. Thank you all
