My wife and I both paddle solo canoes. On some occasions she will go on BWCA trips with me and on some occasions I will go alone.

I have been looking hard at tents. I have looked at ultralight and slightly hardier tents.

I am 6'3" so need a longer tent.

The tent I keep coming back to is the MSR Mutha Hubba NX 3 Tent with a ground cloth. The tent itself is 5.0 pounds packed and a ground cloth adds 11 oz. The tent has great reviews. The tent adds about 2 pounds to an ultralight tent but with its size and weather related positives it appears to be a good tradeoff.

I would use it for solo trips, also when my wife comes along, and also for car camping as we plan to retire this year.

(I have also thought about an MSR Hubba Hubba but the additional space of the Mutha with added roominess seems to allow for a more pleasant camping experience with minimal additional weight.)

Have you used this tent? What are your thoughts on how I would use it?

I have the versions before the NX and love it. Quality, easy to set up and very roomy. The vertical wall design does give it a more spacious feel. I would recommend it.

I have both the Hubba Hubba and the Pappa Hubba. I'm as tall as you and find the HH perfect for myself, though two people in there would NOT be comfortable. The PH is very roomy for two, but might be too heavy as compared to the MH you're thinking of buying. Great quality product from my experience.

The MH sounds like a good compromise for your range of use.

I have owned a Mutha Hubba since 2010. I have probably close to 120 nights on trail with the tent and it still holds up great. I have re-waterproofed/re-taped the rainfly once. I think this should be a testament to the quality of MSR gear.
