Can anyone recommend the most cost effective ultra light (somewhere around 50 pounds) canoe rental places near ely? Any options under @$40/day? This would be for novice paddlers.

All the kevlar tandems will be under 50 pounds regardless of outfitter. I'd start with your entry point and look at who's closest. They will also be about the same price for daily rentals, unless you've got a youth group which then you'll get a lower rate. Many give weeklong rental discounts as well.... often rent for 6 days and get the 7th free - that kinda stuff.

The best place to start would be to click on the Outfitters tab at the top of the page and check the websites of the Ely outfitters listed there for price and details.

My experience with youth groups is they will prefer to give you aluminum and charge more for composites.

I think you will be hard pressed to find one under $40.

Try Gary over at Wilderness Outfitters. He's advertising a 49# duralite tandem for $35 or 17' foot Kevlar for $42.

He's a reasonable guy and might work with you. I do know he some solid canoes that are a bit "ugly" shall we say. Might be an option there.

Just don't tell him I sent you. Lol. I still have to send him back his cooler. Maybe if I fill it with some Texas barbecue and "spirits"...

We rent from Sawtooth on our way up to the Gunflint. We have our favorites on the Ely side but check their websites for rates. The Wenonah Escape, Spirit and NWinds solo are good options and we've rented for about the rate cited above.

Our Scout group uses Gunflint Northwoods and gets Royalex - 50-55 pounds IIRC. Seems like a decent compromise. Listed at $25/day on their site.

Since you said, Ely area - I would suggest Voyageur North or Spirit of the Wilderness.

Interesting, that was not my experience with VNO.

A few years ago I used to rent. I did a lot of research and found that all outfitters are priced about the same. You will be paying anywhere between $42-$50 per day for a ultralight Kevlar canoe. I would recommend Canoe Country Outfitters for the Ely area. If I remember correctly, they are a couple bucks cheaper than most places. $42 A day for a Souris River 17' or $43 for a bell Northwind/Wennonah ultralight. I think outfitters will also give you 5-10-15% off if you rent for more than 6 days.

We used to rent from a place called Outdoor Endeavours at Saint Cloud State university. We got a Bell Northwind for like 150 for a week. I am sure prices have gone up since then (was like 10 years ago) and I am not sure where you a travelling from, but an option to consider. Maybe the U of M has something similar too.
