Was looking for something different for these. Took them into the shop and started putting on some "fishy" colors. Any advice on how these are gonna fare on knife lake or should I go with a different color combo. I don't mind repainting.

Before.

Hey wow those are awesome! Good job! My two favorite color patterns to boot, Sexy shad and perch!

So how is this done? Pasche air brush? What kind of paints? Inquiring minds want to know.

I have 6 Iwatta airbrushes and didn't bother to get them out. All done with fingers and a couple brushes. I used Rub on metallics from Jim Alred taxidermy supply for the bulk of the painting. First few colors were just rubbed on with my fingers then a chisel brush to add some highlights in other colors.

Then Pearl-ex powders were added for the shimmer.

Start by giving the lure a quick buff with fine steel wool then hit it with a quick shot of matte clear. The matte clear being that it is refractory will give an additional bite for the paint. Or you could obviously use primer. With these types of paints it is very important to spray a quick shot of the matte clear between colors to lock them on and keep from rubbing them off while you continue painting. The rub on paints are extremely easy to soften and blend on a surface as well as get sharp lines with a brush. The Pearl-ex pigments are for adding reflective shimmer. They are dimpled, dusted, or rubbed on with a brush or your fingers. Same deal goes with locking the powder in with the clear. When you clear coat it will knock down the intensity of the powders so sometimes I'll go over it twice. The shimmering metallic green down the side of the perch is from the Pearl-ex powder. Lastly a coat of gloss to seal everything up.

Oh for crying out loud that looks sort of fun. I have been giving my old crank baits and lures away......maybe they just need a new paint job! Who knew? Despite doing art for a living I have a hunch my attempts would look amateurish compared to what I see Nelson doing. So far all I have done is dip some jig heads into powder paint!

Yes by all means let's check out some crankbaits.

Clever lad! You are now entitled to count every fish they catch as two fish due to your creativity.

Didn't happen today. Had to help the wife with stuff all day. Being that she's 6 mos pregnant I sort of felt like it was my duty. Plus keeping her happy is important for my own well being right now! Will try tomorrow.
