getting jacked for trip in 3 weeks from now ,, mepps musky killers are not true musky size spinners but for pike they are an excellent choice,,, from post ice out to the dog days of late july. (pic of two , my top producers) theres not alot of weeds/reeds in the BW but if you find them especially board leaf weeds throw these and its pike on in the first half of the season.

Yup certainly more of a pike lure and if truth be told a fine big walleye lure drug up a rocky incline near bottom. I popped a 6.5 eye on a Butchertail 500 which is a very similar lure while fishing from shore mid day during a big blow.

My fav however is the Mepps Musky Marabou. The blade pulsates over that marabou......impressive lure.

Agree with you guys, more of a pike killer than a muskie killer but what does that matter. My favorites are the white tipped with red and black tipped with orange.

I forever dismissed the Musky Marabou until I overheard two guys in a Cabelas talking excitedly about an upcoming fly in Canadian trip and describing in detail how the marabou comes "alive". As soon as you see it in the water it becomes a high confidence lure. Fishes well in shallow water say to about 10ft and an excellent choice for fishing the tops of the weeds as a steady retrieve will keep it where you want it.

Be advised the lure sports two in-line 8/0 trebles. I like nothing less than 9" needle nose to deal with the hooks. I like the perch colors but would be strongly inclined to pick up a solid black one.

FWIW......the fish which caused the capsizing of my vessel, as per the movie " into the heart of the sea", smacked the Musky Marabou over some weed tops and then viciously rammed my boat......or something like that, it's a bit fuzzy, all I remember for sure was ending up in the water ;-)

I used a Musky Marabou for the first time last year on a fly-in. First cast (over some weeds) the thing was absolutely torpedoed by an angry looking pike. Unfortunately, it all happened so fast he wrapped the line around the prop and was gone in a flash. Needless to say, I'm doubling down on the MM to see if I can catch that fish again, and maybe recover my first 'bou:)

Hi Don
The big spinners definitely want a leader.........titanium will last you a lifetime of fish provided they don't get hung. Get the best (not nessacarily the heaviest) leader you can get. Spinners can cause line twist issues so quality swivels and snaps are paramount. I am a fan of braid when fishing northern......if I remember correctly the Mepps spinners can use a file to their hooks. Using a pair of channel locks to hold the hook file each point in a diamond pattern creating 4 cutting surfaces. Avoid "rounding" the point as it is susceptible to breaking and becoming an impediment to success.

The big spinners can and will take quality fish. Give the lure a little snap to get the blades twirling and slam the hooks home on anything that feels different, that includes rocks, weed and any suddenly slack line. Sooner or later that rock or weed will turn into a green toothy torpedo.
