I'm having trouble getting advice on where to go in the Gunflint Trail area for walleyes on and around the opener. I've got a plan for lakers and rainbows, just looking for some generalities on walleyes either in or out of the BWCA.
thanks.

where alpine flows into seagull , pre 1996 DNR use to mark that for no fishing until june 1st, if going farther in, alpine below jasper falls.
new regs from alpine river to saganaga , 3 limit, must be over 17" and only 1 over 20",,, my group will be at the seagull landing opening day about 10am.

that is close to a 2 hour paddle , if stay withing the motorized part of 3 mile island , try out in front of the jap/paulson portage , should be some small feeder creeks in that area.

DNR CO says Swamp near Poplar is hurting right now. Walleye gill net lowest seen in 40 years. Northerns taking over and/or lack of food. DNR staff told my good buddy up on Gunflint. Too bad, used to be a great lake.

For Opener, a good spot is Hungry Jack or even Swamper off the Gunflint. But like the other post says, Seagull is a great place to target early season.

Haha! hold on a second here... based on your previous posts on this site lundojam don't you live in Grand Marais? Shouldn't you be the one giving out advice to all the people who come to visit, not the other way around??? Something wrong with this picture...

Never heard of a Grand Marais resident who has to use a message board in a public setting to get advice on where to fish!

He's a newcomer, I believe, and looking for the spots - I sure am too. Never caught a walleye in 5 canoe trips, had one on once but a bad hook set.

RRR-
Right on. Me neither. I'll get it figured out sooner or later; I'm merely trying for "sooner." This will be my first opener up here. There isn't a lot of local buzz about fishing as folks tend to keep things under their hats (understandably.) I've got a few good fall spots I'm going to re-visit. My search for fishing intel is never-ending and knows no boundaries!!;) Ask me next spring and I'll steer you right.

I'd like to know where you are quoting this new regulation from. If from the Minnesota Fishing Regulations, what page?

Page 46 references saganaga lake and seagull river. Maybe he meant seagull instead of alpine?
