Hoping for the best? We've got friends headed there to meet us next week. Hope the level is down, but up here in MO the rivers are very high and predicting more rain.

Hope he had his pfd on...sure would help his odds.

Just read this a couple of days ago. I hope they find him safe.

That is my back home river, a crown jewell for the Ozarks and the entire country. Unfortunately, too many folks there run it without proper safety consideration. Lots of shenanigans from the college-aged crowd. I've seen some unbelievable things out there.

I hope they find that paddler ok.

wasn't there a river in Arkansas that experienced a flash flood during the middle of the nite a few years ago and a few people died. I think even camper trailers got swept away.

Unfortunately the popular rivers in Arkansas can also be the most dangerous in certain conditions. The Buffalo, Piney, Mulberry, Illinois Bayou, here within 60 miles of each other all drain from the Ozark St.-Francis Mountains. Water can raise in a hurry, the Buffalo has risen 20+ feet over night several times. As mentioned people who come to this area that might not be familiar with those conditions and what to do often pay a high price in lost equipment and unfortunately loss of life. Hope the guy is found safe.

A quick example, two days before my last float the water was at a low floatable stage, the next day it rained a bit north of us. The day we floated from it was at 6.5 and our float from Woolum to Hwy 65 almost 17 miles which should have taken us 8 hours, took around 2 hours.

Dr. Bob, the circumstance you are referring to was south of where I live and the drainage is the Ouachita Mountains, not quite as bad as the Ozarks, but given enough rain any river in a closed in valley can be dangerous. And yes, several people did get killed and a lot of property damage was caused.

Be safe on the rivers if you choose to paddle them, use common sense...

Yes that was back in 2010 and was the Little Missouri River. In fact that campground has never reopened.

Paddling rivers as I do, a 2' rise sounds pretty small; it sounds small until you think of how LARGE the lake is and the volume it would take to raise it 2'. That's a LOT of water, isn't it?

Sad to hear the guy didn't make it. I was afraid of that with the high water, strainers, cold water and cool nights.
