Im going to be going into Crocodile in the fall and was curious as to how far it is from Johnson Falls or I guess the best route to take to get to Johnson Falls. Anyone have any info or advice for me?

Johnson Falls is certainly worth a trip but not really a place that is easily accessed from Crocodile. Perhaps a day trip (probably an ALL day trip) from Crocodile to East Bearskin then to Alder an on to Canoe with a hike from Canoe to the west end of Pine and back through the woods from there to the Falls. Again, it's not close by and would be an ambitious trip for a day. Also you would technically be leaving and re-entering the BWCA a couple of times when you access East Bearskin to and from the falls so that might be an issue for you as well (certain exit re-entry situations are exempted from the rule prohibiting this--not sure if this is one of those situations). Perhaps a suggestion would be a day trip on a self issued permit from Clearwater Lodge either before or after your stay on Crocodile. This would take you from Clearwater to Caribou and Little Caribou before a final portage to Pine and then the short hike from Pine's west end to the falls.

Have fun on your trip and I would look at SOME way to take in Johnson Falls if you can!

Johnson Falls is between Pine and Rocky Lakes. And unfortunately, if you got a permit for Entry Point 66 you can only camp on Crocodile Lake and may not visit any other lakes in the BWCAW. If you want to see the falls you would have to have a permit for EP 64, (among a couple others) and travel either though Alder to Pine or Caribou to Pine.

That walk from Canoe is your best bet I think - long but not too bad!

Never been there, but trying to learn the eastern BW...

EP 62-Clearwater - Caribou - Little Caribou - Pine
or
EP 68-Pine - McFarland - Pine

Both around 3.5 hrs by my planning estimate.

So, are these the two EPs being used by folks wanting to get to Johnson Falls in the shortest possible travel time?

These are relatively high use routes. You are smart to plan travel through these areas during the week, from May thru early June, or after August. It's rare during the summer to be at the falls alone. You must swim in upper and middle falls. Quite the experience! The trail from Pine was beaten up in a June storm last summer, but you can hike it with a good pair of sandals - which you can use while swimming. Water is pretty high thru late spring - so swimming may not be an option until later in the summer. All in all, it is one of the "must see" water falls along with Rose Falls - which is just a few lakes west of EP 62. I have yet to paddle through Little Caribou lake when the 5 star campsite in unoccupied. If you find that one open, take it! Enjoy and take many photos!

This is my wife standing on a rock at Johnson Falls (middle pool) last early June. Water was crazy high - so no swimming for us. We were all alone due to the frost that greeted us a few nights that trip. We camped on the 4th site on Caribou. While we paddled back from Little Caribou, 3 parties were camped in places other than approved campsites with firegrates. Needless to say, traffic was heavy and they didn't feel like taking the hike over to Clearwater for a campsite.
