I just stop and fill up my 64 oz growler from a local taproom before I head in.

There's a liquor store in Ely that sells it. I don't remember the name (I'm a non-drinker), though I remember the store advertising it on a sign, so you probably can't miss it. The store is on Sheridan Street.

They don't sell beer in 16oz plastic bottles any longer. Mike has 4 different 40 oz malt liquors and 1 ice beer in a 40 oz. Or like people mention, you can get a growler. I have looked everywhere for the 16 oz. bottles, none to be found.

Thanks, QM. Though not a drinker, it's good to know that kind of information. Did the 16 ounce plastics just not sell? Any idea?

I think the primary market for the plastic bottles was to sell at sporting events although it worked nicely around the campfire for the first few nights of a canoe trip as well. The industry switched to the "aluminum beer bottles" because they stay cold longer.

The Boathouse in Ely sells plastic growlers that are approximately the equivalent of 5 beers. :)

I just dump regular beer in a nalgene, and cool it in the lake. Supposedly this is bad for some beerology reason. But it seems to work.

I guess the bottlers figured it just wasn't worth producing them in plastic any longer. I talked to Mike about it, he said he offered to buy 400 cases if they would bottle them. They told Mike it wasn't worth it. I checked to see if the resealable aluminum bottles were OK to take and was told they are illegal. Not sure if they are still producing these for sporting events or not? Been awhile since I have been to a stadium.

Don't know why they seem to have been discontinued, but I took them in the past. But I have to say that while the beer tasted okay on the trip, plastic bottled beer tasted terrible anywhere else. I don't really miss them, I take whisky now.

I ended up taking 40 oz bottles of Ice House last year to the Boundary Waters. It wasn't the best, but it was beer. When I go to Quetico I take vodka and mix with crystal light lemonade.

Buy a few, Growlers on Amazon

Print a few labels for them,

“GOVERNMENT WARNING:
(1) According to the Surgeon General,
women should not drink alcoholic beverages
during pregnancy because of the risk of
birth defects.
(2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages
impairs your ability to drive a car or
operate machinery, and may cause health
problems.”.

Use a font larger than 25.

Fill them on the way and keep them in a cooler till you leave.

I don't know anything about Growlers. Do you just keep them in the lake to get them somewhat cold?
05/10/2017 05:27PM
Big mico brew fan and have about a dozen different 1/2 gal growlers.
But would not consider taking one or more on a trip involving packing/carrying/portaging them. For that I use Pat's Back Country Brew and carbonate drinks using the coolest water I can find.

We tried the beer in nalgene and found out the hard way that the pressure can actually cause leaking. What we have been doing the last few years is take some 2-liter pop bottles, dump out or drink the pop, then add beer of your choice. Do this day before putting in. Easy to get cold if it warms by sinking with basketball net anchor. We usually bring some of the stronger beers that you weren't really able to get pre-bottled. Castle Danger Double Crossing is a personal favorite. Really, you want it to be worth its weight. Ironically, too much double crossing does put us in a situation where we have to do double crossings on some portages ;)

I used to homebrew and bottle a few 2 liter pop bottles full in the winter and we would bring these along as a treat in the summer. Anchor bag and a few rocks and they could be kept pretty cool. I would think these as fine replacements to growlers and crushable for easy packing out.

So, maybe I could try this with 16oz plastic soda bottles as well, instead of nalgene? I suppose the soda bottles would handle carbonation better? (I love warm Miller in plastic. To warm mine up, I usually have a buddy get something out of the cooler, and just not close it. That way everything slowly warms up inside.)

+1 on the Boathouse. The Entry Point Ale is a really easy beer to drink even if not ice cold. And it sure did taste great on the first night of the trip!

Will the boat house fill a 2 liter soda bottle for me? Can they do that legally or do you need to buy the growler?

Beer is my go to.. Wisconsin native of course.. but on solos as I have only done it is bang for the buck with brandy or the like. But after too much "enjoyment" the first night makes for a extra long portage the next day!

I take THESE.

Kleen Kanteen

Once they are empty we use them for water in camp for cooking. WE always need more water, and this always helps........

The 5L mini-kegs (DraughtKeg) are legal, at least according to the SNF office I checked with last year.

Heineken & Newcastle (same company) are the ones that have the integrated tap.

Submerged below the thermocline for a few hours and...ahhh...

Did you just call the SNF office? I would love to be able to verify this. Can anyone verify this information concerning the Draughtkegs?
