So, I've always rented a canoe from an outfitter, and put in at their location (think Seagull, Rockwood, Lake One, Tuscarora, etc..

What/where/how do you determine where to put in, when you bring your own canoe? I guess I've never looked. Do all entry points have a public landing? Is it ok to park for a week at a time in these landings?
I'm assuming yes on all of these, but want to verify.

I assume you understand a permit. I'm guessing the outfitter you used previously secured your permit? Permits are for specific entry points. You can reserve a permit online. And generally each entry point does have a parking area and you can park there.

What Bill said. The put-ins are at or near the entry points. There are outfitters at some, but not all. Tuscarora Outfitters is on Round Lake. There are 2 EP's associated with Round - #51, Missing Link and #52, Brant. There is a large public lot there. About a mile before you reach Round Lake and Tuscarora Outfitters, there is the parking lot and landing on the Cross River for #50, Cross Bay.

Voyageur Maps shows the put-ins for the EP's as a black box with the EP number.

Some put-in parking lots and landing, like the one on the north end of Poplar Lake, which serves several entries originating out of Poplar are large, while others like Morgan, which serve one and have few permits are just small pull-off places to park a few cars. Morgan EP starts with a portage, some EP's start with a paddle.

You can find them on the maps and the guidebooks also have directions.

Also certain entry points will lend themselves to getting a tow, especially on the border lakes, from one of the local outfitters. You don't need to rent anything from them to get a tow, you just pay the tow fee. Getting a permit well in advance is important even without that tow as many good EPs go early.

Just never needed to use a public launch point, and didn't quite know how they worked.
When you park, do you have to purchase a parking permit, or pay a fee to use the launch point (above and beyond what you purchase via rec.gov)?

Parking is free, nothing else needed.

Make sure you take proper precautions at public launches - lock your vehicle, valuables out of site, take rakes off vehicles, etc. Many outfitters allow parking at their lots for a reasonable fee even without rental.

Don't leave any food or food waste in car! Bears will smell it and do auto body work!

Not generally but why chance it? We have the Spring Creek racks that people use and those are not technically connected to the vehicle so we ask people put them inside the car while out in the bdub. At $600 or so a set, better to find a place to store them.

I've installed Yakima's core locks on my racks and all attached accessories - bikes, canoes, skis. Simple peace of mind.
