Me and a couple buddies are headed into Pipestone bay through the Back Bay Portage for 3 nights and 4 days and are really excited. We plan on making the trek from Moose->PP->Back Bay Portage with our 16 ft Lund/25 hp motor. Was hoping to pick your brains about fishing and the Back Bay portage in general.

- From my research it appears Back Bay can be hot with big crappies. Would this time of year be worth our while to give it a try? Any advice on presentation and depths that I should be targeting if we wanted to screw around a bit in Back Bay prior to the portage?
- How is the portage? Last year we did the 2 portages from Fall and wasn't too bad at all. Is the Back Bay portage comparable to these?
- Other than the Lewis Narrows, does anyone have suggestions on what depths and locations on the Pipestone side that we should be targeting this time of year for Walleye and Pike?

Any and all advice is much appreciated! This our 6th annual and haven't really been able to get to the Pipestone side much, but heard much about the "mystical" pipestone bay.

Thanks and Fish On!!!

I've never been to back bay but was in Hoist Bay a year ago, portage back from Wood Lake. Hoist bay was hot, we caught at least 20 northern in the 2 hours we were back there. Definitely worth the long trip in!

I've done the portage from Back Bay but, there were 4 of us with 2 14 footers and 15 hp motors. It's been a while back but I remember fairly short and rocky with some up hill going in I believe. A little work but worth it.

Crappies and sunfish can be had. Fishing can be good depending on timing. All of the crappies I have caught were large but tasted like mud. Try around the islands right when you get to back bay. Plenty of bass and pike but everything depends on timing.
