Gonna try my mini down rigger this year.
Have tried it up there before with no success.
Granted I have not given it enough time.
Snowbank and Burntside are my target lakes.
Hopefully a little more precise lure depth.
Probably bought this thing 20 yrs ago with limited action.

I like your boat Yogi.

Not so keen on bringing in a downrigger to fish out of a canoe. Primarily its a safety issue as hanging that ball on a rock will have instant negative forces applied to your watercraft. I suppose if you have good electronics and know the lake..........do you have a line counter on the down rigger? If not how will you know how deep you are? Admittedly it does sound fun to have that flutter spoon behind a cannon ball.

But I am not so sure such precise presentations are required. Why not just use a Dipsy Diver if extra depth is your desire? I was hitting bottom in 80ft of water pulling my Dipsy. The large size is a bit of a bear to paddle and 2 hours of trolling was starting to get my shoulders attention however. But maybe the medium size would work well. It worked pretty good for me.......at least catching pike in 40ft of water with flutter spoons (they really whack it). The trout not so much.........I ended up catching the trout shallower pulling a crank bait the same sunny hot day.......go figure.

When are you going? In all but the hottest months a Tail Dancer on braid could hit 35ft or even 40ft. Throw in that Lakers will come up 20ft to eat something if they are "on".

But do your own thing and let us know how it works out.

If the trout don't cooperate on snowbank a shad rap pulled behind a yellow bird will produce some nice walleyes and maybe even a silver pike on the snowbank sister humps. Third sister has given up several memorable walleyes trolling for me anyways.... as long as those monster 90hp + boats stick to the appropriate side of the boundary. Spooky fish, I send that planer off to the side a ways. I always heard they fish walleyes deep on snowbank in the fall, like 50+ feet.

MT, the handle says one turn =one foot.
Plus say at 40 ft I should be able to pick up the ball with my electronics.
Your right, when I first bought it I took it up and put it on a canoe. I felt a lot of vibration on the side, as I just had it clamped on the side.
The boat handles that better.
I'm quessing I'm going to be able to have half the line out at hook up .
I'm going up on June 17 for 2 wks so I'll have some time to play with it.
Same goes for the planner boards. Just another tool on the belt.

I'm sure I'm going to have some folk look at me and say what is that idiot doing. I'm good with that as long as I might be able to make a few of them go hhmmmm...
Stay tuned....

I get it........I had assumed you were going to be using it on a canoe (or are you? > I'm confused)............... 2 weeks! You lucky dog! I miss my tin boat Canada fish camp days. That was lots of fun.

I'm with you on the boards........sure why not especially with the outboard going.

I still think the dypsy divers should find a spot in your arsenal. They can also be made to angle out away from the boat. Flutter spoons and dypsy divers. Have one rod with the down rigger but have one rod with a dypsy angled away from the boat to avoid tangles......that way you can still run 2 deep lines if you want.......better!

Hanging a dypsy diver on the bottom in a canoe will get your attention however. I was trolling out of an 18ft decked canoe/kayak hybrid on Basswood with a 9' planer board rod when my dypsy hung bottom in 80ft of water. The leverage of the long rod coupled with the no stretch braid caused quite a list to one side ("Captain we are hard-a-port, should I give the abandon ship command"?)

So give us the Good, bad and ugly of what worked and what didn't when you get back.

MT, no I won't be using it on a canoe. Just me going this year. I am gonna rent a kayak 1 day to see if this could be for me. I'm 6'4" 275lbs. I have a bad ( fused) right ankle .New left knee and rebuilt left rotator cuff. Not sure about getting in and out of those things.BUT I'M GONNA TRY.
I'm sold on the dipsy diver. I'll stop at cables on the way up and pick up a sm one.
I'm gonna take two trolling battery and use the electric to troll. No need to listen to the gas motor unless I'm going from point A to B... although my 15 hp. purrs.

Hope to provide many pics.

Dang dude you been through the ringer.

I have a Kayak but my butt hurts after about 2 or 3 hours. Its lots of fun though and you just sort of glide along. You can generally handle rougher water as well. I wanted to trip in the Everglades and that often means paddling oceanside. I had considered an Ocean Kayak but my Butt said "no way jose', don't even think about it".

Then I picked up a Canoe Kayak Hybrid for the job (Superior Expedition). Its 18ft long and has a foot controlled rudder system.......It would be great for a guy your size. Comes with an adjustable bucket seat (adjust the height) I was surprised at how much rough water it can handle. Just loaded it today on my van and will be dragging it to Lake Superior in a few months. Something to consider...........
