Has anyone ever fished Red Rock Lake? I am bringing my father, son and brother up to Boundary Waters this coming July and we are more interested in fishing than canoeing and thought about making a base camp on Red Rock Lake for 3 days if it's a decent fishing lake. We don't care what type of species of fish we catch we just want to catch fish. I seen on the site where there are three reviews for good fishing on Red Rock but wanted to hear from you all who have actually stayed on and fished Red Rock.

I will be heading this way next week for 4 days and will try to make time to give you a report when I get back.

That would be fantastic if you could let us in on some good fishing spots. Also, if you are paddling around and see a good campsite you would recommend I would appreciate that as well. Thanks

Stayed on Red Rock a few years ago, caught nice sized eyes, northern, & bass. Not huge numbers but nice sized fish. Stayed at the South end of the lake. South and East of campsite 411 there is a hump, we had good luck on that spot in July.

Just posted this picture, (below) on another thread this week. Last year my son caught this walleye on Red Rock Lake from shore at camp, in July, in shallow water, 3 pm on a sunny day, can''t figure that one out.

Though is was July, we had decent fishing. Lot of smallmouths, fair amount of smaller northerns and some nice eater walleyes. Try for walleyes around the 1 or 2 small islands about halfway down the lake, shoreline drops off fairly steep there and we had some success.

Also caught some northerns in the bay on the north-east corner of the lake. We stayed at capmsite #407 about half way down the like, it was fairly decent. Good smallmouth fishing from shore in camp.

That's a very nice walleye there, johndku.

Red Rock is a smaller lake so it should be easier to check out the whole lake, and be sure to try different times of day too, as sometimes timing is everything, especially with walleye. Never fished it. What I have heard suggests that it can be finicky.

Also, forgot to mention, if you're base camping on Red Rock Lake, it's also worth taking the 40-45 rod portage into Alpine lake. It's an easy portage, especially if you're only hauling your fishing gear, and Alpine is probably a better overall fishing lake than Red Rock.

Be sure to fish the bottom of the falls where Jasper empties in to Alpine at the south end of Alpine. Great bass and walleye spot.

Just got back from Alpine. Fished Red Rock for half a day. Did well on SMB on the lower half of the lake, shallow sandy bottoms, near deadfalls.

We had better (but not great) luck with walleyes on Alpine.

Good luck!
