I leave on Friday for northwestern Ontario. It'll be 25 days of solo fishing. I've had longer solo paddling trips, but this will be the longest fishing trip of my life. I am concerned about my hands holding up to a thousand fish or so and have purchased a couple different kinds of gloves. My first day will be lake trout, brook trout, and rainbow. The next day will be aurora trout and brook trout. Then smallmouth, pike, and walleye. Then muskies. And so on. I'll keep changing species to keep things interesting and am hoping for three Grand Slams.
The First Grand Slam: Trout Town with at least four of the following: splake, lakers, brookies, rainbows, and aurora trout
The Second Grand Slam: Panfish Palooza with at least four of the following: rock bass, pumpkinseed, black crappie, perch, and bluegill
The Third Grand Slam: Standard Slam: this will be the easy one with at least four of the following: smallmouth, largemouth, pike, musky, walleye, sauger, whitefish, and burbot
There will be at least 30 lakes, one big river, and some creeks. SOOO EXCITED!!!! I'll write about it for at least one magazine upon my return and post a trip report too. I'll get plenty of fish pics with the fish laid against a ruler. I hope to hook at least a couple forty-inch pike. In the past, I've released them in the water, but this time, I hope to net them with one hand while holding the rod with the other. Even though I'm bringing a big net, it's gonna be a challenge.

that's a huge itinerary!!! good luck... i'm a bit concerned with photos, though... who will be taking or will you wear a go pro to catch ALL the action? i've never heard of some of these fish species so i'm excited to see photos and hear about each encounter!

I'll shoot the photos, Mocha. No GoPro action photos, so the fish photos will suck, as it'll be a fish in the bottom of my canoe against the tape. I'll take three cameras, one an SLR and one waterproof, so I'll get some good scene shots for the article. I do hope to catch some of the rare ones for canoeing, like whitefish, sauger, burbot, and aurora trout.
Shock, it'll be north and east of Kenora.
Dean, thanks for being excited for me! I'm so excited that I don't know if I can hold it all myself.

Good advice. My hands do worry me. I once did a 1400-mile paddling trip and I started out with thin leather gloves. The gloves developed more and more holes and by the time they were more holes than leather, my skin underneath had callused. Here's hoping I can repeat that trick!

I'm jealous! You don't think of trout being a "Toothy" fish, but they are. As you know a couple days "Lipping" trout and my hands are always raw, cut, and scraped up. I think a nice pair of mechanic's gloves like you would get at Auto Zone, Lowes, etc would be nice? Looking forward to reading all about it!

Your tip made me laugh, Ben! "
I was going to say pfd... but that sounded boring. How about an original bug shirt with a wonder woman insignia on it? I think I could talk him into it... but not by Friday.

camera mount
Sounds like a dream come true. You could de-suckify your fish pics with a mount like the one in the link and the timer function on your camera. Zoom way out and then crop them in post-production.
Have fun!

Miss Molly,
For this challenge i would I highly recommend picking up a the newest gopro. Its the perfect solution to your fish picture issue. Mount it facing you on the thwart where it can be turned down to capture the fish on ruler photos. Just get a couple huge memory cards, set it to shoot at 2.7 or 4k (yes they shoot in 4k) and at 30 FPS. Then all you need to do when you get fish down is hit the film button on the gopro (have it set to start recording immediately). It will take video down on the tape and then gopro has great software that allows you to take ANY of those frames as a still. It takes unbelievably good photos and its so easy. You dont have to worry about capturing the perfect frame because you can just select from any of the frames. Totally water proof without a housing, and weighs next to nothing. You can also set it to have voice commands so you dont even have to touch any thing to stop the recording. Just say "GoPro Stop recording".
just a thought

MM, I am so excited for you! I know you have been researching and anticipating this trip for a while now! I look forward to the trip report and see how many grand slams you get! I know you worry about your hands but we worry about you. Take care of yourself and have a great time. You deserve it...geez it has only been like a couple of years since you last fished, hasn't it?

It's been six years, which is way too long. However, I did finish a house and build four gardens in that time. I'll be careful. I'll keep telling myself, "Watch my feet," when in the woods.
Yeah, I think I'll get a GoPro and rig my canoe before next year.

MissMolly,
I love the idea of your trip. I just finished a toothy fish trip, and here are some things I found that worked for me, after being refined over the years because of the need of dailywear contacts and working finger tips.
I don't wear gloves, but do have a release glove in the boat for bad hook jobs, etc... I use Working Man Hands lotion after I use my hand cleaner in the morning, (I think Purell), and after I put my contacts in. It really keeps my hands good. I follow the same routine at night. I also try to put on the liquid skin seal at night and again after my routine in the morning to keep the hook, gill plate, and tooth cuts and pokes from spreading and pealing.
I found this really works well for me and my hands are in very good shape when I finish a trip. The only problem I found is that my finger print thing on my I-phone doesn't work for a couple of days when I get back. It must do something to my fingerprints. I do keep a camera on a gorilla tripod gripping the thwart in front of me for photos, I put the timer on when I'm by myself.
I hope this helps.

quote Bdubguy: "Sounds fantastic MM, safe travels! I look forward to the reports. What magazine will your story be in?"
Just Canoe & Kayak online. It'll be a how-to-do logging road paddling trips on Crown Land, so not a trip report, but I'll write the latter for bwca.com!

Something I have been doing for the last several years for my hands is waring water proof leather gloves. I take a pair of leather gloves and work as much SnoSeal into them as I can. I put the gloves on and rub it in all over then do it again with some kind of heat source to get the SnoSeal to penetrate even deeper. For fishing I just use the left one which is the one I handle fish with. As long as the cuff does not go under water my hand stays dry. They also come in handy around camp and for tending the fire.

Nothing like a fisher with a bright smile holding a dark fish beneath a dark sky!
Thanks for the well wishes and ideas, all. I do have a clamp-on camera thingy: if I can just find it, I'll bring it! I'm also going to stop and buy some serious hand lotion to apply at night and try the glove idea, one hand and two hands. Of course, if I fail to catch fish, the hands won't be a problem, but it's Crown Land, where the fish are even dumber than me, so that likely won't happen. Now, for a little song by way of John Denver and Peter, Paul, and Mary:
I'm leaving in a big car
It's so heavy
It don't go far*
Oh, God, I'm glad to go!
*without guzzling more gas!

I hope you have great weather and a breeze on your tail.
I so look forward to your trip report.
Do you write a journal during your trips? I wish I did on my many trips. Will be this year.
With your targeting so many species I would love to see your tackle box.

Good idea about a journal! I just grabbed a notepad because of you.
Tackle BOX? Ha. I've got several. One is small for bushwhacking through the woods to cast from the shore. Another is for muskies. Another is smallish for fishing lakes for only a few hours. Then there's a little one for trout and the big one for when I'll be at the same lake for a few days. I'm targeting more than a dozen species for spice. I think if I just fished one or two for three plus weeks, I might lose focus. I'm all packed and leaving at six in the morning.
