I have a question about a youth non-resident license. I have purchased an adult 7 day non-resident license. My son is 17 (DOB 12/2999). I’m not sure if he needs an adult 7 day permit or a youth Ages 16 to 17 or Youth own limit. I'm finding conflicting information on the MN DNR site. I've sent them an email, but not sure how fast they will respond.

I appreciate any assistance you can provide.

Description:

Valid for youth ages 16 to 17. Youth under the age of 16 who wish to possess their own limit must purchase this license.

They usually respond the same day.

Your son needs the Angling - Youth Ages16 to 17 or Youth own limit (nr) - Code 205. It's 5$ license. As long as he purchases the license before he turns 18 it's valid for the season even if he turns 18 during it. Essentially kids under 16 don't need to buy their own license unless you want them to be able to keep their own limit of fish. If the kids are under 16 and want to keep a limit of fish or are 16 or 17 they need to buy the license I mentioned. They don't have to pay for the expensive non-resident license until they are 18.

The cost is $6, not $5. They never list the $1 issuing fee in the DNR handbook.

Thank you for the information. You saved me $35. He didn't go last year so this is the first year I've had to deal with his license.
