Thinking about taking an extra day to get to the BW.

Was wondering on your thoughts on any waterfalls or other points of interest on our way to Grand Marais.

What waterfalls should we stop at?
Recommended places to eat?
Any other good points of interest? (lookouts over the lake?)

Thanks a bunch!

Gooseberry Falls, Palisade Head, Temperance River State Park. Hang out in Grand Marais for a couple of hours.

These are all great places to see. Among them, I think that Gooseberry Falls, the hike along Shovel Point and to the high falls of the Baptism River in Tettegouche State Park, and the hike up Oberg Mountain stand out. If you've never been, Split Rick lighthouse is worth checking out - it's run by the MN Historical Society, so there is an entrance fee to the lighthouse itself, but you can walk around the grounds, which is part of the state park, for free. Starting in Duluth, of course, canal park, the aerial lift bridge, and Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center are must-sees.

As far as dining, the Anchor bar in Superior is the diviest of bars, but it has great burgers and hand-cut fries. In Duluth, Northern Waters Smokehaus is where you satisfy your bison pastrami fix, and the Pickwick, Canal Park Brewing, and the Duluth Grill are all excellent in their own ways. On the "scenic" drive between Duluth and Two Harbors, the New Scenic Cafe is very "foodie," but the food is very good. Russ Kendalls Smokehouse is the opposite, but the fish is excellent. Beyond that, Northern Lights Restaurant in Beaver Bay has declined a bit, but it's still very good, and the Crooked Spoon in Grand Marais is amazing.

Enjoy your journey!

Last time up this way we ate at the at the Harbor House Grill on the way in and on the way out at the Angry Trout Cafe. Both are in Grand Marais. We sat on the deck at each place as the views are very very nice. The food at both places was very good. Menu is on the high end but that is what we were looking for. Great meal going in and a great meal coming out. There are several great restaurants along the North Shore and a few others in Grand Marais. I researched a few different places along the way because wasn't sure at which point we would be stoping on the way in and out. Had a few options and Grand Marais worked with the schedule. I'd go back to both of these options.

Have a great trip.

I like the crooked spoon in Grand Marais to follow up your waterfall tour.

So, as the trip is getting closer, time is getting cut short.

If you only had to pick 2 non-eat places to visit. What would they be? It looks like Gooseberry should be one.
What other one would you suggest?

So many to choose from... Beaver river falls in Beaver Bay is fun to climb around and avoid the crowds that fill all the State parks.

There is construction on the bridge right now and some of the trails are closed off.
Cascade River park is nice. Several falls within a short hike

I would stop at caribou river falls. Kind of a diamond in the rough and you can wade in under the falls. At least I did last time there.

Illgen Falls is another easy to get to falls that is easy to pass by and not even know it is there. It is on Hwy 1 to Finland. It is just past the SHT trailhead parking lot over on the left side of the road heading to Finland. There is a wide pull off area there but no signs. There is a trail that leads down past the Illgen Falls cabin. Only about 0.3 round trip. Tettegouche SP map

- Tettegouche State Park Visitor center for a bathroom break. Its seriously the best.
- Caribou Falls - Spur Trail of Superior Hiking Trail
- Temperance River - Gorge
- Coho restaurant near the Sawbill Trail/Blue Fin Bay
- Cascade Falls north of Lutsen
- Harbor House Inn in Grand Marais was delish!
- Trail Center of course. They have an AMAZING breakfast for your way out!

I haven't been to the Sandpaper Museum in Two Harbors, but it could be interesting?

Gooseberry Falls State Park and the upper, middle and lower falls are beautiful but are likely to be overrun with people - depends on your perspective. For my money I would hike to the high falls of the Baptism River in Tettegouche State park for a classic Minnesota postcard scene of the highest waterfall entirely in the state of MN. The mouth of the river at Lake Superior is also really cool with a huge gravel bar that allows you to do some swimming into the lake as far as you can stand the temps;)

The hike up stream in Temperance River State park is a fun and beautiful hike as well. Beautiful views of a raging wild little river through a steep narrow gorge. If you continue to hike up to the top of the gorge where the river levels off you can enjoy a couple fun things - a waterfall massage and cliff diving into a narrow deep river pool. Cool stuff.

That is not the highest waterfall in the state of MN though. High Falls up by Grand Portage SP on the US/Canadian border is the highest in the state according to websites on line.

OF...you are correct the High Falls on the border is higher but I qualified my statement by saying "entirely in the state of MN" and I believe that is correct.

they are both really cool.

I find a stop at Two Harbors always a good time, Yellowstone Mallet 229 Locomotive and the ore docks.

The North Shore is lined with great parks and waterfalls, but 2 of my favorites are in WI just before Superior/Duluth on US35, Pattison SP. Big and Little Manitou.

Top of a 140 foot drop.
