It's a bit more complicated. The wires are very small and have a foil shielding around them. There are people here that have successfully done it before but the one time I tried I failed. I then took it to a buddy that is an electronics junkie and he couldn't get it to work either. A replacement transducer was only $10 cheaper than a complete unit. I'm not saying it can't be done but proceed with caution.

+1. The power cable is easy. The transducer is a different animal.

How about simply coiling the cable to the length you need, then zip-tying the coil to keep it that way?

This is exactly what I did the second time. I was amazed at how small what seems like a mile of cable could be wrapped around the base of the unit.

Were the wires so small he couldnt get them to make a connection? Or did he get them conected and it still didnt work?

He got them connected but between getting the shielding put back on them and getting the connection right it never worked after that.

I've done it on my Humminbird 688, it is a little tricky with the small gauge wires. I actually soldered the two connections, and then shielded the wires with some Mylar wrap that I had in my fly-tying box. That was two years ago and I have had no problems with it thus far.

I sent an email to Lowrance asking about their thoughts about shortening my transducer cable. Lowrance said to just leave it the length that it is. They do not recommend shortening. They said shortening would alter depth readings.
So I just coil the cable and wrap it tight with a plastic tie.
