From what my understanding is. I just need to go to MNDNR or local DMV and ask for registration to be changed under my name correct? All I got from the previous owner was the registration card, and a hand written note that he had sold me the canoe with his address. Please advise. Thanks all! Heading up to EP32 Saturday morning.

This link should help you: watercraft licensing

Go in with your note and registration card and they should be able to swap over registration to you. If just transferring ownership, should be ~$13.00
Helpful if you have the registration number, which would be on the registration card. MN####XX

They should have a half sheet of paper bill of sale form to use for future use. They have a spot on there for sale price, though on canoe registration, you don't pay any tax on the purchase price.

It should be very easy. I've registered 3 previously owned canoes at local registrar by merely filling out the MN DNR transfer form. No owner statement or signature required. All you need is the serial number and the previous license number (if available).

Related question from a non Minnesotan. I bought a canoe from an outfitter and it has a MN registration sticker good through this year. I'd guess I'd easily get away with it but is it legal or should I remove or cover that one with a new one of my own?

The registration sticker with the two digit year does not need to be replaced upon new ownership unless it is expired. When transferring ownership, they don't charge for new year stickers unless they are about to, or have expired.
