Heading up I a few weeks, just wondering if anyone has any recent fishing reports. Bass, walleye, pike, musky, panfish doesn't matter I am a equal opportunity fishermen. We are taking a couple of young men up, 9 and 11 years old, and would like to try and put them on some fish.

Thanks in advance and safe travels,
Chris

Current fishing for smallmouth up there is that they are not on the beds yet. You have to fish out a little ways from shore. Green pumpkin tubes and pearl soft plastic jerk baits were producing well.

Pike are still biting on anything and everything, including walleyes you are trying to reel in.

Walleyes were found in muddy bottoms with new weed growth emerging, feeding on small perch. They were also found on points and in sandy coves.

Didn't do any trout fishing, too busy chasing after bronzebacks.

I was on Clearwater and gogebic June 1-4. Lake trout had slowed down. The turn over happened. An algea bloom happened. Brookies were only taking tiny flies. Small mouth seemed on normal summer behavior. Best fishing ended up being tonight at dark and early and. I'm guessing we are into typical summer patterns at this point. I marked fish 45' over 76' water.

Still on our way home from Kawnipi. Good not great Walleye fishing. We had a couple 80-100 Walleye days plus bonus smb and pike (canoe not person) but, the bite was very early and very late. Crazy hot sunny weather with flat water killed the mid-day bite. I agree the smb are not on beds yet. We caught several smb measured right at 20", none larger. All of the quality smb were caught in 8' + water. The water was so flat as soon as the sun hit the lake the fish ran for deeper water. We could still run the points and scratch 'em out but, the sun was like Africa intense so we just started fishing the first and last 3+ hours of day and hanging out during the heat of the day for at least 3 of our base camp days. We have never had that many sunny, warm and windless days on a trip in early June. Good luck.

Was on Malberg Tues and wed and searched for walleyes but only got a few. Was too tired to go down to the rapids but talked to some guys coming back from there one evening.....only got one Pike. Caught one big female SMB still fat with eggs. Got some walleyes on Phoebe on Thur evening off a reef drop off....6-8 fow. Saw some SMB on beds coming out the Lady Chain. Water temps are changing quick though.....fishing will be heating up fast.

Starting to see some bass on beds. We absolutely hammered the lakers vertical jigging spoons in 30-60 feet.

Fished Moose Chain and Basswood last week with good success for SMB and bluegill. Bass caught mostly on baby bass colored Super Flukes, a few with leeches and some with a 2" white/yellow Kalin Grub on 1/8 ounce yellow jighead. Caught bluegill on the nests with same grub. Found mostly male SMB on the nest with spotty females moving up later in the week as the sun warmed the water temps. Hottest 1st week of June I have ever experienced in the BW! A couple of 50-60 fish days but mostly 30-40...still beats working!

The walleye action was very steady on Sunday. I don't have 100 fish days like some of you but we must have caught around 20 walleyes along with some bass and a pike.

I guess I should pontificate a bit before anyone else gets their undies in a bundle. There are 7 walleyes and 2 bass on that stringer. 2 of the walleyes are slightly over 20". We have about 58% of our legal limit of walleyes on that stringer. We could have easily kept our limited of 12. We kept fish that were hooked deep and realeased a majority of them.

Wow, no wonder we go 28 miles into Quetico to avoid the catch and keep crowd. Small wonder you don't understand how in the world it's not difficult to catch 80-100 walleye a day. Answer: We don't kill 9 per day per group.

Walleye hunter has released thousands of fish and if you have been around this site you would know that most of his pictures are of one big fish at a time that is getting ready to be released. He has too much class to get into it with people that are questioning his character but I couldn't just sit back and listen to this. Walleye hunters photo journal

Guy can't keep fish? Unbelievable.

06/15/2017 10:14PM
Stuff happens...we are carefull to keep only what we will eat, and don't bring any home. We probably eat one fish per day per person. However, deep hooked fish can cause a dilemma. Last year on McEwen my buddy and I got a double...2 gill hooked LT that totaled 11# between them. What should you do? Try to eat them all? Quit fishing? Throw them back to die? And how many people was WalleyeHunter feeding? If he had a large group that is about right for a big fish fry.

I am by no means a catch and keep fisherman but Basspro said it perfectly. Of all the pics walleye_hunter has posted this is the first I recall seeing a stringer. Usually it's one 30 incher after another ready to release, much the way QueticoMike is with the smallies.

See nothing wrong with what WH did keeping several legal fish. Not sure why people are making an issue of this? He did nothing wrong, he did not keep and eat illegal fish.

I go to the BW for many reasons. One of those is for fish dinners with fresh fish. I will never apologize for eating a few of the BW fish.

This guy ate a few small walleye as part of a large group. Seems like a perfect practice to me.

We tend to take our stringer pics with the whole group. I know what inspired my reaction was 1 guy (2 with the photog) keeping 9 fish! If he was feeding a group, maybe keeping a couple for fish omelets in the morning, I apologize....

No need to guess; it's pretty clear in the regs what you can keep. Read em!

I didn't try to imply that it was wrong. I say more power to him, if anyone should be able to enjoy a shorelunch it would be WH.

I have several stringer pictures from back in the day...Never posted on here for thought of getting my **** drug through the dirt....
And quests what...... They were legal too....

Only problem I would say is that if they were all on one stringer... Ranger Rick might tell you they have to be on separate stringers....

I come up there and plan on eating lots of fish.
2 week trip I plan on bringing home 1 limit of walleye, smallmouth, lake trout, northern, crappie and bluegills.and rainbow or splake...
All within the limits....

When you live in Florida you see enormous amounts of waste from recreational fishermen. I didn't know so I assumed there was more than one fisherman. Personally I never keep big fish but don't want to stop anyone else from doing that, unless abusing the resource, i.e. poaching. Looks like one heck of a day!

i hear what your saying mapsguy1955 but unfortunately when people spend alot of money for a fishing trip to florida -bwca-quetico-to-ontario to the NW territory's , they do want to take something home or pics with there trophy catch.
and i was one of these people , but now i just want to eat fish while i'm there and bring a meal home for the wife .
and i know WH has released more 30" walleyes than i will ever catch in my life .

WH has as much respect for Walleye as any of us do, probably more, and wouldn't be stupid enough to harm them in any way. He also isn't stupid enough to post a photo of anything illegal, even if he did by some small miracle do something illegal.

Nice stringer, I hope mine group's is half that healthy come 1st week of July.

That is a fine stringer of fish WH. I would love to have been sitting around your "table" that evening eating one of the finest fresh water fish that exists.

Not sure why you are getting negative feedback. I flyfish quite often and one of the tailraces I fish has approx 6000 fish per mile. Most people practice catch and release; some like to take 4-5 home to eat. My position has always been this .... if an angler has a valid license and is keeping legal fish and stays within the regs ..... then there is not an issue. I continue to be surprised at the people who confront an angler for keeping legal fish. I have had several nasty looks from people for having 3-4 fish on a stringer ( I keep maybe 7-8 fish a year, pay $91 for a license).

Again, that is a very nice stringer of fish. Thank you for sharing. Tight lines!
