I was looking at the chart for weight versus length. It give a value for a 27" smallie. I can't even imagine one that big.
So.. how big is your biggest? I think I've got a few 21"s

I assume this was an accident while walleye fishing with live bait?"
Yes it was, plain hook with a 4" pike sucker
I have an Aqua View, and had seen a bed on a reef I fish in 18 FOW earlier that year. I asked the DNR if it was possible that bass made them that deep. They said on occasion very large bass will do that.
The fish was caught on the first day of the first year that any bass caught after September 13th???? had to be released.
Glad it happened that day or I may have had to live with the eternal shame of getting a Bass mounted!! :)

Good story! I have a friend who lived in Winton named Zeus. Not sure if he still lives there or not, but he used be a fishing guide back in the day. He had a large dislike for bass, not unlike yourself. We went camping and fishing on Basswood during the 4th of July. He ended up catching the biggest smallmouth bass of the trip.......and he had his picture taken with it. I started to give him crap about being a hypocrite. He went on to say that he only likes catching the big ones and if it is big enough he will take a picture of it. Kind of reminded me of you when you said you would have to get it mounted.

Zeus (aka Carl) still lives in Winton. We used to play on the same softball team (Cranberry's) way back when. I'm gonna inform him that he's being dissed on this site by some QueticoMike character!!! :)

Yep, Carl. I lived up there in 2007. I am friend of his buddy Scott Vogel who I knew when we lived in the same town in Ohio. They also hung around with Chuck, who was the bowler that lived on Boundary Street. Then there was Freddy who was still guiding up there. They were all working construction back in '07.
I'm sure Carl still dislikes smallmouth bass :)
He might remember me as " Teach " ( Scott Vogel's buddy from Ohio ) the guy that fished for bass all of the time with soft plastic jerk baits.

Yup, I know Scott, and I assume Chuck would be Chuck Brummand (sp???) from Bacida, between Bemidji and Lake George. Fred the guide escapes me???

I remember Zeus. He did not guide for my group personally, but he was guiding another group out of the same outfitter. I think it was North Country Lodge/Don Beland's canoe outfitter at the time on Moose. Still have one of the old brochures around somewhere.

Freddy didn't live in Ely, but came in during the season to guide. He might have worked for John Herrick. I know he was still guiding up to 2010, but haven't heard anything since. I think he stayed with Chuck when he wasn't out in the woods. I'm sure if you mention Freddy to Chuck, Carl, or Scott they could fill you in on the fellow. Small world :)

Now it came to me, Freddy is short for Donovan (?) Fredricks who used to, or still guides for John Herrick.

quote gymcoachdon: "Mine doesn't measure up to the others, but I just returned from Quetico and caught my biggest smallmouth thus far. It was 19.5", and weighed about 4.5 lbs. It was hard to read the scale exactly, but it didn't hit the 5 lb mark.
"
More and more, I look at the shape of a fish and yours has that big fish arc. Rather than rising slightly across the top, it bows upward. When a bass starts to mimic a bluegill's shape, it's a beast. It's also got that forehead notch that big bluegills and walleyes have.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

It was a number 8 Rapala Husky Jerk in a perch pattern. That was my number 1 lure for the week, probably because I just kept catching fish. When I wanted to go deeper, I ran a ShadRap or Deep Taildancer. I think other than fishing from shore, all my fish were caught trolling. The wind made it tough to fish solo.

21.75 and 5# 6oz. Have caught a few(6 or 7?) over 21 and quite a few 20's. I will add that it is all about the lake, some of the larger lakes, especially in Quetico, have quite a few 20's but I think honest 21's are pretty rare. An outfitter friend caught a 24, but I can't remember the weight. I think it was around 7. TGO's would be in the 8 pound range, yikes! You should get a replica made of that one Jim. It might hurt your reputation a bit but what a fish! Analyzers wife's fish is a beauty, and would certainly be over 6. I'm not too surprised about Mike's ( Mr. smallmouth) 23" fish. Fun thread.
So many fish,so little time

It sucks when you don't have a pic, length or weight because the big one got away (again). But it is fun to relive the moment! I had been throwing a pink soft plastic on a heavy lead jig for most of the day. Had hooked logs and debris a bit so the hook was prolly dull and bent out. Didnt have another jig to change to unfortunately. Our group had been on basswood but were moving through smaller lakes toward Loon. As we're crossing an otherwise unremarkable lake lengthwise i spotted a single lilly pad right in the middle of the lake. Paddling along at a good clip I was struck by how could there be just 1 pad on the entire lake and what it might mean while also remembering bass I had caught as a kid around pads. I slowed the canoe, grabbed my rod with the dull hook and flipped the soft plastic and it sank deep. As soon as I took up the slack that bait got slammed. I set the hook and it was ON. A couple of short violent runs and the angle changed. The violent fish was gonna jump! What happened next will be forever etched in my mind in SLOW motion! The fish cleared the water and went up and up and up! Doubt I've ever seen a smallie jump half that high in my life! Shot straight out of a cannon. And HUGE. Violently twisting and thrashing in the air and someting else. Someting pink. Flying at least 10 ft above the fish an on a perfect parabolic arc - MY BAIT! When the other canoes heard the splash they all stopped and started yelling WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT??? The Big One. At least 7 lbs. Maybe more. Got away again. And thats what keeps all of us coming back for more.
Fish On!

How many people did you have to feed?
My personal best is also ~21". I didn't really think I would catch one bigger than that... and now I know that 25" ones are out there.

Man 27” is huge!!!
In South Florida I’ve caught a handful of 25” largemouth. All of 5 to 6 pounds. In other states that length would be 10 pounds easy. Can’t imagine a small mouth that big.
Even at 21” that’s a big Smallie!
