I was on Con Island two weeks ago and saw on the shore brush an odd device. I found out it was a Mechanical Fisher Company yo-yo reel. In all my decades of fishing I never saw or used one. Anyway, when looking it up I see they have been around for a long time, and the one I found says "pat. applied for" so I am guessing it is a pretty old one. Anyone know more about this?

These were still for sale just a few years ago, may still be today, I didn't do any checking. I've always seen them used over open water rather than ice fishing. Tied to a overhanging branch and used much like a trot line. Set em , leave em, comeback and check em later. Not now legal to use such a device in MN as it "sets" the hook for you.

That is a handlining reel...quite popular for walleye on the Mississippi during spring...and amongst old timers anywhere...so deadly there was once talk of making them illegal. I've watched handliners in Red Wing sink the boat with walleyes using them when everyone using conventional gear was getting blanked!

No, the reel pictured is not the same as a handlining reel. Completely different reel.
