Brule area report for 6-11/6-16.
Change of plans as walleyes were really shallow gorging on dragonfly larva. 2' out from shore in emergent vegetation most days. Bright sun no clouds didn't matter they were putting on the feed. Mud also helped. Best afternoon was 56 from shore amongst 3 guys using cane poles. Bobber with 2' of line and a leech did the trick. Bass were spawning we didn't bother them much. Several 100 fish days but size was lacking, enough 19-25"ers to keep a walleye guy happy. Wind made topwater fishing difficult. The walleye were delicious. Bugs were not bad at all.

That is an amazing report. Cane poles? Who knew? Fished cane poles once for Oscars in the Everglades and thought it was a hoot.

I'm not so sure I would of found those fish. Thanks for expanding my thinking.

Awesome! What made you think of using long cane poles? Have you fished this pattern before?

We have a biggest cane pole fish contest each year from camp. The usual honey holes were devoid of fish. We got lucky as our first camp had a shallow muddy bay on one side of the point loaded with those bugs. I've never seen walleye plump full of those larva before. Good to know. Once we knew what they were eating it wasn't hard to put a pattern together. Did lots of trolling only one eye caught.

Cane poles are cool. They still have their place. Good bite. Good pics.

The ole timers told how they would troll with a cane pole for pike. If it was a big Pike they threw the pole in the lake and the Pike dragged the pole around til tired. You can't beat a cane pole for still fishing.

There is a very famous old picture of guys at the rail with long rods hauling in big tuna and the boat listing to one side.

I found it........this is amazing especially if you know the strength of tuna. These guys truly had to be iron men.

Iron men of tuna

Some still do that on Mille lacs lake.

I am also amazed how the smallmouth population continues to grow in numbers and lakes found in. These last three decades it has really increased. Especially the last 10 years.

Wow. I have cured and used a few cane poles. Some I considered too big . But they were for crappie in Lily pads and weeds. Channel cats even; but pike ? Wow. Cool,
.
