Anyone know off hand which way Horse River flows (north or south?) I was pretty sure it flowed south and the elevation of Crooked and Horse lakes on my map seems to agree, but someone on reddit was under a different opinion earlier today and now I'm not so sure.

it flows north, but unless it is high water, it isn't terribly noticeable.

Rivers are generally named for their source.... Horse river starts on Horse Lake and flows to Basswood. Louse River starts from Louse, Frost the same.
