Seems like I'm paddling with the dog a lot now. I'm thinking of selling my black gold wildfire, or maybe my magic, and getting more of a fishing/dog tub. Also thinking of moving the seat backwards like some of the outfitters do in their solos. Or I could buy a used outfitter boat already set up like that, and just hoard more boats.

Any specific canoe recommendations? I have a SR Q16 - that does nor work - too big.

(No, not a fake question.)

I've rented a Northstar Northwind Solo for my last 3 solos and love it. Hope to buy one someday. I solo with a 90 lb lab and the thing is rock solid stable, turns well in twisty creeks, and even I ( average at best paddler) can keep her straight. I rented an SR Q 16 for my first solo and feel just as stable in the Northwind Solo but it only weighs 29 lbs, is a lot narrower, and doesn't get blown around in the wind like the SR Q16..

I would second the Northwind Solo. I have one and live on a like in the Twin Cities. Stop by with your dog and try it out if you want.

Thanks, I think he loves his trips more than anyone in the family. When little duckling and I were saying goodbye to momma at 2am for our Memorial Day weekend trip he was sitting at the door with his nose on the doorknob. Somehow he knew this was the first time he was getting to go along on a daddy/daughter trip.

Wow, I didn't realize they made any that light! I thought low 40's was about the lightest. What a dream! Both of mine are around 65, which are great compared to the aluminums I used to have, but portages would be a breeze with half the canoe weight!

On the subject of dog canoes, my dog is a small shi-tzu/terrier, so she doesn't make much of a difference in the canoe either way.

I can't imagine fishing out of my Magic with my dog in it! I love my Magic for tripping but when I'm vertical fishing I hate it. I purchased a SRQ16 and love it! It does catch a little more wind but it also handles a little taller waves. I use a yak paddle when soloing with wind so that helps. I think the activity of your dog would be the biggest factor in choosing.

northwind solo

oops I lied.... Starlite version is 28lbs ;) and the blacklite is 30lbs. It is so easy to portage.

I wish I could take my little buddy fishing with me... but she's easily excitable and a beagle who follows her nose. She'd definitely have me spluttering and struggling to right my canoe as soon as the first wildlife bounds by.

Even if she would stay still in the boat, she barks at every sound and would irritate people for miles around.
