Or you could be like me and wing it. I've made a dozen or so paddles, bent and straight, without plans. I use basswood, cedar, clear pine, oak and other scraps I have laying around. I like Titebond III. It's kind of fun to laminate different woods together shafts, blades and handles. As I have said a thousand times, if I can do it anyone can.

I bought this book having never made a paddle. There were many plans for paddles and lots of tips. Give this book two thumbs up.

+1 from me as well. I like this book because it talks about everything you would need to build/carve a paddle. I put carve in because the authors go in-depth on single piece, straight shaft paddles. They also have a section on laminated, bent shaft, and kayak paddles. Also gives detailed measurements on the different blade shapes. "
Now I have italics everywhere. Sorry. I can't seem to edit this comment to get rid of the quotes.

I really liked the way they gave the exact measurements for the many paddles they talked about. I bought some 1/4" graph paper and taped a few pieces together. Then I plotted the measurements they gave on the graph paper with dots from a center line. Then I used a French curve to connect the dots to make the paddle shape. After I had the whole paddle shape on paper I cut the paper shape out and layed it on the paddle board. I then used spray paint to lightly spray an outline where to cut. Then I drew a solid line for cutting. This tip was very helpful no mater what method you choose.

I hope you like it. It has a lot of history in it too. I forgot about that but the first chapter is on paddle history.
